Something to think on...

I came across this article and thought it was worth sharing. It's certainly food for thought...

200 000/1 to get my first novel published. Yep, that sounds about right. Writers write. I'm pretty good on quantity. So I can bring those odds down to 100 000/1. But yes a very interesting article. Thanks for that Cloven Hoof. I think the one thing that is not mentioned is feedback. Writers write, but without feedback they keep making the same mistakes year in, year out.

Nice link CH.

Always glad to pass on good stuff :) I agree that the article does seem to gloss over a few things that don't quite fit its message, and I have to say that it also ignores the fact that some people are just 'natural' writers. They don't need to practice because they can just do it without thinking - lucky beggars!- while the rest of us need to work at it. On the whole I found it a very encouraging piece though. If all those people listed took time to properly make it then we've got no reason to get disheartened when we don't get instant success. The best bit for me was the advice about not over-promoting your first book at the expense of writing the second. Speaking as someone who's going through that first-book promo thing at the moment, I found that a very valuable lesson indeed. It made me step back a bit and realise that I do need to get my butt in gear and carry on with the sequel. I seem to have spent a lot of time on the finished book this week, and not much on the new one! In which case, I'd better stop blathering and go and get on with it...
