one of the most annoying things is not so much the seat up or down thing but the drunk mad cap idea that the loo moves when .....
and that the damp patch that you stand in, as they slipped on the mat so they thought it best to move it out of the way before they used the loo (not sure which is worse wet patch on floor or wet patch on the mat)... had nothing what so ever to do with them
this problem with "aim" I have found is worse after certain foot matches ....... or during night's out with certain other males ..... I mean we women never miss now do we ?!
oh I once fell in and had to be pulled out .... I wasn't that drunk ... honest ... but my biggest nightmare is falling in and getting stuck .... a bit like getting your big toe stuck in the bath tap .....can't understand how people do that ....

Firstly, colour is right because its called the English language, we are English so we decide what it is. If the French decided to change one of their words could we say that they are wrong and continue to spell it the old way?
The most annoying thing in the world is easily people over the age of 8 on BMX's, if your gonna do stunts and stuff then fine, but just riding around? You look a fool! It looks like youve just borrowed some little girls bike and are now riding around with your knees repeatedly hitting your chin. Its daft, totally and utterly stupid.

I think you may have missed the point I was making Easty. It has nothing to do with 'choosing' how we spell a word, I was hoping to explain WHY the differences came about.
Firstly, I said the -our endings on words come from the French (I think!). We were ruled by the Normans for quite some time during which old english and french merged in some words and other french words became common usage. Just as earlier, under roman occupation, many latin words entered our both language and french and are still in use today albeit in an anglicised.
Secondly, I wanted to show that american spelling isn't necessarily incorrect. It dates from when america was first colonised and hasn't changed much since. (don't pick me up on the 'new' words that have come out of the usa since, I am talking strictly about common words spelt differently)
as an example. Colour - is Middle English derived from the Old French 'color' which was originally a Latin word.
I'm not sure when the 'u' became widely used - 250 years ago the same words were still being spelled differently in different areas of england - but it would have been the 'color' version that was taken to america and remained in use since.
so you see both versions are english/french/latin and both versions are correct.
ps for some reason the french now spell it couleur
pps the above may not be strictly accurate for i am far from expert but it does, hopefully, illustrate my point.
