Kingdom of Heaven

I just watched this film cos i like oldey worldey things, well actually Knights getting decapitated and having their bits amputated and such like is wot i like.

But it was very boring and long winded, Orlando Bloom played the lead role as Balian protector of Jerusalem, now he's obviously a pretty boy but i'm afraid he lacked the charisma or presence to be a lead role for a film like this. His weedy voice wouldn't motivate skin of a rice pudding, never mind a shit scared beseiged army.

The scenes where Saladin's army are bombarding Jerusalem with Trebouchets are quite stunning though.

A very European cast ususally makes a film a wee bit more interesting...not here though sadly.

Might just be me being picky.I was looking forward to it too. But Ridley Scott has been a bit naughty in regard to being historically accurate. The web site below is very critical.

I liked Orlando in Troy, as the hormonally-driven impetuous younger brother Paris. I think you're right, though; he lacks a certain...strength of character... to hold a film, the way Russell Crowe did with Gladiator. He carried the entire film on his broad, scarred shoulders he did. Wot a man!

I have tried to watch Gladiator twice and each time fallen asleep within the first minute. I'm rather annoyed because I did make the effort.

You'll last even less time if you watch KOH. I thought Gladiator was good...but then i suppose i would.

Ha! I've watched Gladiator TWENTY-TWO TIMES. And loved it every time. Sure, it had some holes, some clunky script; Joaquin Phoenix's English(?) accent was worse than my own efforts. But in terms of pure archetypal power, Russie had it. Of course, I cream myself over anything having to do with the glory days of the Roman Empire, so I thoroughly enjoyed it, historically accurate (or not, as the case was)... I enjoyed Troy, as well, even though it turned the Iliad inside out. I just love bloody swordfights, when done in an historical context. It's the sex, guns, and profanity movies I can do without...

was that supposed to be English? Why? I just thought he was being kind of public school/ spoilt boy posh but still American and I thought he was very good at that frustrated, spoilt but still needing respect insanity. He's a decent actor old Joaquin (although not as good an actor as his namesake, Mr. Cortez is a dancer) he was good in 8mm and the one where he's a cocky 'sell anything' soldier (forgot the film title) I didn't think there were any oscar winning performances in there but thats Hollywood I guess. and if I see one more scene where someone's walking through a dreamlike landscape brushuing their hand over some tall grass I'm gonna puke! ... and if I see John Culshaw do his gladiator impression again I'm gonna puke even more.

I still laugh everytime I think of his, 'busy little bee' speach. I loved Gladiator when it first came out, but since, I've watched it and some of the dialogue is so terrible. And that bit at the end is just plain awful. AND, how come he goes on and on about his wife so much, but his only memory of her is her standing there saying nowt, sort of squinting. Doesn't say much for the larks they had does it? If my boyfriend was brutally slain I wouldn't just remember him standing there gawping. I'd like to think he wouldn't just think of me doing that either.

Liam Neeson was very good in the film, but he died quite early on. There is also a king called Baldwin, which made me chuckle.

Oh, I love Joaquin. He was especially good as the tormented abbot in Quills. Viz: his accent: Ridley Scott said at the time that since there were so many different accents (Aussie, American, British theatre, etc.) that they should perhaps standardise it somewhat so as to avoid confusion. This pissed Russell Crowe off; since his character was Spanish, he wanted to sound like Antonio Banderas, but Scott thought that would confuse things even more. Which is sad, because, really, the Roman Army was a HUGE amalgamation from across the Empire, and no doubt had a hundred different accents to choose from. I loved that 'hand over the wheat' scene. Very sensual. Then again, Russie could do just about anything and I'd love it.

I'm glad Terry's not dead though. 87 internal deaths since Christmas would make it a tad unrealistic dontcha think?

Actually, Russie is very good with the accents. His accent in 'The Insider', which was a difficult cross between a northeastern nasality and a Kentucky drawl (with which the real person he portrayed really spoke) was flawless. He could've pulled off a Spanish accent more Spanish than Antonio's.

No he couldn't AG, you're thinking with your labia there I'm afraid. Whatever he does will always have a twinge of the OZ about it, even his American accents have it. He's alright, I like him as an actor and even as a bloke but he's no Peter Ustinov.

I think I have a pretty good handle on American accents, there, ely. The guys in Python used to butcher the good old 'Standard American' accent (hilariously); Russie's are pretty good. Much better than my Australian accent. Mind you, his ENGLISH accents still smack of Oz, but theirs is a more subtle difference of rounded vowels and lilting at the end instead of the middle of the syllable. But you're right. My love plum loves to love Russell. *wink*
