What the ????
I just put a story on ABC and it triggered the age rating check. I reread it and couldn't see anything that might have set this off. So I editted it to see if any possibly contentious words were the problem. It kept going to review.
Then I re-entered it and claimed it was a poem. It did not go to review.
Any ideas why?
PS - I did delete the peom version since it is not a poem!
It never seems to catch Karl, he must get the oscar for swearing!
This site is fab, compared to its sister site YoungABC Tales...my daughter entered two stories over a week ago, up popped the "This has to be checked which usually takes a couple of days thingy". She was a bit disappointed, but I explained why that has to happen on a kids site....however, its now almost a week later, her work still hasnt appeared.....to say that she is losing interest is an understatement. She also registered before it was up and running as per their request, and never heard another thing. She then had to re register when it launched.
Shame that....but the whole Young ABC thing seems to be a bit shite compared to this. Is it 'cos its early days, or what?
That doesn't sound like you, Liana...?
Um...have I found a way to beat this virus?
Yes it was me Andrea. Grumpy and feeling unwell. Apologies.
I was just narked - it's hard enough to keep kids interest going sometimes without being thwarted..
:o(
I am miserable. Send me some Vla Andrea, I miss it.
'Fraid all I can offer is custard, Liana...
And sympathy.
same thing happens to me, Rhombus, only, it happens to my poems as well as my stories.
we're obviously marked men.
That'll be our rude word filter being all oversensitiv (deliberately so to avoid filth getting on the site. It picks up parts of words as well as whole words, so that the following would all get picked up (I'll leave you to work out why!):
Scunthorpe
Sparse
Harass
etc etc etc
M,
am I right in thinking that it also steals anything that is rated above 'u' by an author?
S
Don't think so but I'll double check tomorrow.
Cheers
Em
If I put the rating at 15 or 18 myself, would the ratings checker still take over? It would be worth doing this to get a story visible quickly.
I read one moan that complained that when a story was cleared it still kept it's original posting date. This meant it never really got a chance of being read. Is this true?
Dear All
This seems to be a major problem with this site. Because of this filter some excellent work never gets read because it ends up way on down the line. There is an obvious solution. ABC should employ around the clock reviewers, work that is read by a humans and not by the computer. I know that the editors of this site read a great deal of the work but do they read everything? Of course they dont because if they did there would be no need for a filter. The downside of this is that work will not immediatly be seen on the site, a wait of an hour would be suitable for most writers I think.
The reason why this does not happen is no doubt financial, but hey, we have helped make this site the success it is. It very important to us what happens in the future.
Sorry to get on my high horse.

I clear the stuff on the swear filter every day - first thing I do when I log into the site to do the editing. Unfortunately, if someone comes along and posts 10 poems after you submit your piece, it will not go into the ten last posted. But that is the same whether it went into the swear filter or not, just that there would have been a brief window when it would have been in the last ten.
I think Emily has said in the thread above this that it would be possible to display the last 20, and also you can search on date entered for Story Gallery and Poetry Gallery, which should improve people's chances.
If it helps people, if you have a piece that might go onto the swear filter (and I know it is not always possible to predict this) - if you put it on at 6.00 pm weekdays, I will be there to check it and restore it to the site.
At present, we do read everything that comes in each day - the point of the swear filter is to keep it off the main site until it is rated accordingly.
I've only just got this position Ralph and you want me sacked already !
Andrew
We all love you.
We wont fill out the p45 just yet.

In answer to Ralph's suggestion - I couldn't agree more. One hour would be very acceptable to us. However there are certain financial imperatives. To employ round the clock Editors would cost far more then we have at present - and it's not what I would do with that money if I had it right now. Surely it is not unreasonable to wait a few hours - which is what happens more often than not at the moment. The swearing filter is essential to maintain the integrity of the site and it does catch everything (so far)!
I do appreciate that many people look at the 'last 10 entered' and we are now working so that those pieces logged on to the site from the swearing filter will be re-timed so that they appear at the time they are admitted to the site and not the time they were caught on the spike. This will overcome the problem far more cheaply and just as effectively.
Leave it with us, Ralph, and thankyou for your support!
pip pip,

It doesnt catch the swearing on the forums though Tony....I have seen some reet fiery stuff lately.
Did it not used to catch all that too? What happened?
what's wrong with swearing?
i like swearing.
Nothing.
It just rather defeats the object of having a swearing filter, does it not?????
Oh piss off Liana
Love Danny
:o)
Nope, it doesn't get swearing on the forums yet but we are looking at updating the system so rude words should hopefully vanish soon...
My rude words vanished alright!
I said '@!#$' and it came out '&"@!' (or summat like that)!
See what I mean? It's done it again...
*wonders if my rude words are ruder than everyone else's*
