If this was a road movie...
If this was a road movie¦ Henry switched on the computer and the screen lit up the room. He hadn't realised how dark it had become during the afternoon. He reached for the desk light switch and flicked it. The bulb blinked and went out. "Shit, muttered Henry, though there was nobody there to hear him. It was too dark in the room to work without a light, and the naked bulb hanging from the ceiling didn't give out the right light to work by. He examined the bulb, but he already knew it was the wrong fitting to put in the desk-lamp. The convenience store round the corner would have one. He'd already been there twice today.

A Girl Called Mercy
A Girl Called Mercy Holland was happy. He brushed his way past the tourists onto the platform, and onto the escalator. What were the bloody Japanese doing here at eight in the morning? He squeezed his way up the left side of the escalator, letting his briefcase bang against the legs of the fat bitch that got in his way at the bottom. The person ahead of him at the barrier was having trouble. Holland pretended not to notice, and walked straight through him, briefcase first. On the other side of the barrier Holland paused. The man was on his knees, swearing in some foreign language. Oh yes. Holland was happy.

Connor pressed his hands deeper into the pockets of his long, black coat and pushed his chin under the collar.

Let Sleeping Dogs Go
Let Sleeping Dogs Go The door opened and the animals shifted uneasily. The first man in looked around and stepped inside the room, turning to make sure he was being followed. He was, and he stepped aside to let his partner enter before him. The first man, the taller of the two, walked slowly around the room. He gave a wave to the security camera, safe in the knowledge that with his face covered he couldn't be recognised. Safe, also, in the knowledge that the security guard who was supposed to be watching the screens was fast asleep. This was too easy.

Love Songs
Love Songs Typhoon Number Six was brushing the coast of Honshu last night, and I was having a problem with fidelity. I'd just got off the phone to Kerry. She sounded depressed in her letter, and didn't sound much better on the phone. She said hearing my voice cheered her up, but I think it reminded her how far away I was. I stood outside and looked at the rain. It was like a sheet had been put up in front of everything. The rain bounced off the roofs of the houses below my seventh floor balcony, the sound almost constant, almost industrial. Out to sea lightning flashed, and the thunder was barely audible above the rain.
