Leggings – the blog, Buzzards

Leggings – the blog, Buzzards The Buzzards are back in Britain, their wings flung back, Rupert and his girls are floating over D -our ex prime minister, in hopes that he has more to give from General Watson's will. I should have been the main beneficiary, except, I suppose he's found some way around it, since most of it went to Scotland, where thievery is in vogue... and Rupert possibly picked up sky shares... and that's not enough for him and...

Dogwalking

The good thing about dogwalking, some extra time out along the estuary and on the beach and in Phear Park with its monumental 200 year old oaks. The bad thing - the dog! My best friend slipped on the estuary mud when walking Chesney, Rudy and Thor - daft name for a Jack Russell. She's mega-conscientious and she's also skint so she is carrying out her work duties with her right forearm in plaster and supported with a sling. She's my best friend...

Where are all the working class writers? Radio 4, BBCiPlayer.

Where are all the working class writers? http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09fzmjt That’s the question Kit de Waal asked. She published her first novel, My Name is Leon , at the age of 55. I’ve placed an order to read this book. Well, you know what happened next. International acclaim and all the happy-ending stuff. If you read very carefully between the lines you’ll see the lie that works so well in politics and book publishing and in real life...

Just bring a pencil - Writer’s retreat May 2018; Spain

There is a certain tranquillity to a place that is almost totally off-grid. Away from the continual digital bombardment of the modern 24/7 culture, The Hotel El Geco Verde offers this: https://www.responsiblevacation.com/vacation/7984/writers-retreat-in-andalucia-spain Situated in the beautiful region of Andalucía, high up in the region of the Sierra de Castril mountains, you could not find a more serene place. “I love your library”, I said “...

Louise Welsh (2002 [2011]) The Cutting Room.

This is Louise Welsh’s debut novel and the first of her work I’ve read. That old cliché applies here, it won’t be the last. It’s great, up there with Iain Banks, The Wasp Factory . I’m biased that way and like things to be parochial and have resonance with people I know and places I recognise. The setting is just up the road, a square mile of Hyndland and Crow Road. Not may folk understand that Downhill is a place and not just a state of mind...
