Since the friends are all female... I hope the rest of you don't mind.
She had mistaken the slow burning of acid rain for desire dissolved in his tears of love.
She had assumed that sunshine was the warmth and joy that emanated from his heart.
She had felt the caresses of the wind, sometimes gentle and tender, sometimes wild; and thought it was his passion.
She had laughed with pleasure at the small flying gifts of song that nested in her hair and thought they were tokens of his love.
Lost in her dream of love she had not noticed the pollution that had slowly poisoned her roots.
Had been unaware as she slowly grew twisted, her leaves browned and withered, and her beauty gradually faded.
No longer able to bud, her limbs stiff and brittle - she finally comprehended as she saw him draw close with his axe!
She had mistaken life for love, mistaken his occasional need of shelter for a deep and intimate sharing, his appreciation of her beauty for an eternal communion of their souls.
Now he came with his axe and she knew she would soon be firewood and he would find another to provide shelter and lay beneath on the hot Summer nights!
