Very Important Question

I need some very important input from some very creative people.

All you have to do is answer this survey (one question) and tell me your age

--Would you rather have the ability to fly or to be invisible?--

I'd rather fly - 16

As far as I understood, there was no nudity clause on invisibility - if I tuck my knife or gun into the waistband of my invisible jeans and pull my shirt over it, the knife or gun is invisible. Agree that as soon as I put the weapon in my hand, you'll see it, but it will be too late for you by then... Or we could join in alliance, and crush all of the feeble homo sapiens and rule together, bwah-ha-ha. I have a list of guidelines for our domination...

Jeff just pretend you are invisible and I will see you there then we can really see what the X Factor is all about, two invisible heads are always better than one...

I like the question. I'd definitely choose to fly. For me invisibility would mean silence as well. How would you know you existed? [%sig%]

invisible - 43 Then I could stab a certain person in the jacuzzi, the club would have to clean it out and disinfect it and I could use it again. Hurray. wonder if being stabbed in the jacuzzi is like being stabbed behind the arras?

I can see the interpretation of invisibility, but since when is flight altruistic? Nobody has said they want to fly so that they can save people falling from bridges, off tower blocks etc. I'd prefer to fly, but being practical, I remember that I'm scared of heights, and there's no guarantee that I wouldn't be terrified and pass out. I'm not really arsed about invisibility - for a start, I spend a lot on my wardrobe and that would all be wasted... but I'd plump for it because flying seems out. Can't I have be able to move super-fast, like the Flash?

Hazel, I thought it common place for people to piss in the jacuzzi anyway, not that 'I've' ever been in one.

Jeff you have a point there "When am I Going " ? well apart from going round the bend this forgetting things is doing my head in, almost!! sure I had a apointment to perform this Saturday but it could have been the Saturday before who knows as this old age is doing me no good at all thats why I chose invisible so people don't have to come face to face with me but at least you didn't turn me down flat and "How Kind" that was a bonus I didn't expect but no matter how tempting I am going to let you down gently as I wouldn't wish me on my worst enemy years ago could well be but a hell of a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then. You know Jeff I have always hated Mondays and did think when I retired that would go away but no such luck but todays Monday!! after reading your thread has made an elderly lady's day much brighter so much so I am even thinking of going out in the rain to shout it from the roof tops to anyone who will listen just how luckly I am today as someone has made me feel special for a day the last person to do that was a cab driver in a true story I wrote and I was only five at the time, with you all it took was nice words which couldn't be better as my feelings for words especially the written word are very passionate indeed so must say to you! many thanks for them also I am well aware that I can go on a bit but am also very greatful for small mercies...

Iev asked a couple of people here this question... and their response has always been the same as mine... initially, flying would be the choice, but on reflection, to be invisible is a winner. I think being invisible would actually be more altruistic, as what can you achieve by being able to fly? (apart from being able to nip to the shops quickly for your mum or something.) being inviible, you would be able to listen in on what folks wanted, and deliver accordingly, like some psychic santa claus. alternatively, if they were planning a murder, you could hide all the knives, or do them in yourself. no, i'll take invisi.

Hold on, hold on. Do the flying people have wings or not? Because if they do, we can clip them, thus nullifying their powers. And if they don't, then no God-fearing redneck is gonna believe they're angels. I can see it now: Tim: Harken! I am Gabriel, sent to bestow glad tidings upon you folk, and bring news of war! Member of the NRA: Hot didgereedoo! Floatin' martians on mah property. Time to give old Martha Spitfire her exermacise. I'm going to be having fun sniping at the piano carriers. It'll be like Mrs. Twit popping the helium balloons her husband attached to her chair - as you pick them off, the piano will get heavier and heavier for the remaining birdies, until they come crashing down. The tinkling of mangled keys will be as music to my transparent ears.

It has to be fly -31 being invisible wouldn't feel any different and evesdroppers never like what they hear. But flying wow! I could go and see my boyfriend with out spending money on flights what a sweet thought.

I don't think they have wings, though we didn't set any parameters. I imagine them flying in a similar way that humans would swim, so they are unaffected by gravity, but move at swimmers pace. By the time our invisible cohorts have written on blackboards across Alabama, "Beware the non-winged flying demons who will arrive soon", there'll be a tough reception for the Rokkit hordes.

Do you know, I was just about to cite evolutionary evidence - to whit, the world is full of creatures able to fly who have not been able to turn that into domination of non-flying animals, and then go on to say that as there have never been invisible animals on earth we cannot say what impact that might have; and then I realised... How do I know there are no invisible animals? I can't rely on the fossil record. *faintly paranoid now*

Hey how come no ones thought of being able to go underwater and not drown - I mean wouldn't it be lovely to be able to explore all those wonderful underwater sea places You could even walk to france - ok you'de get wet and would have to aviod certain coastal areas due to shipping but ... we could all become fish errr - I didn't say it, I didn't say it errrrrrr sorry fish pollution maybe not such a good idea ....

'How do I know there are no invisible animals?' Am I the only one who's been reaping scads of story ideas off this thread?

The way to settle this might be to fashion a Half-life or Unreal Tournament mod that gave one team jetpacks and the other invisibility. Does anyone know if such a thing exists already? "Am I the only one who's been reaping scads of story ideas off this thread?" Yep. I'm too caught up in Fistbatch of Pomes, faerotica, and one involving hovercraft versus otters.

I've just downloaded RPGmaker 2000 and about seventy tutorials and chipsets. I'll make an RPG with flyers versus invisibles. Wow! That's actually a sweet idea.

Far be it from me to assist the flying fraternity, but it does seem to me that going aloft with bags of icing sugar/flour/tins of paint might be more useful against invisible foes than grand pianos. Hmm, if invisibility had ever flickered into existence and then died out, we'd never know. I can see an evolutionary advantage in that you avoid predators and are better able to hunt, but the problem is finding a mate. You'd have to have something whereby you could readily locate others of your species without that being so apparent to every other animal that it renders invisibility useless. Dreaming now of invisible fish.

'You'd have to have something whereby you could readily locate others of your species without that being so apparent to every other animal that it renders invisibility useless.' Well, yes, and for a lot of animals visibility is a fairly tertiary faculty when it comes to hunting. Sound and smell - they're the bad boys.

I'm usually attracted by a man's smell, around the neck, especially just behind the ears at the hairline or at his breastbone if it's a bit hairy. Maybe we were invisible in a past life and evolved to being visible so that we can further evolve by actually dealing with the world and all it's glory and the smell thing is what takes us back to when it was all so much more simple. Looks would never be an issue. No judgements. I like it when I catch someone smelling my hair too. on my head. just in case any sauna freaks are out there. Missi - you are bad :-)

Whereas invisibility, in the comic-book world at least, is connected with Alan Moore's Hawley Griffin, who murders policemen for their uniform and sells out the human race to the martian invaders... I still think it's a bit simplistic. And I always felt that Superman's life must be awful - he can't save everyone, so how many people die in accidents while he's having coffee with Lois or taking a shower? There must be a God-complex writ large there. See, just being able to fly doesn't enable you to save people from falling off bridges, anymore than being able to swim means you are likely to spend all day walking along river-banks waiting to dive in and save people. Without super speed and strength, you wouldn't be able to save anyone. I see the general point, I'm just being pedantic for the sake of it, and to root for all those who plumped for invisibility, many of whom happen to be my favourite people. If someone elected to be Superman above Batman, I'd have doubts about their personality - it has to be the Dark Knight every time. I would be invisible and slap people in bars every time they said "I'm not racist, but..."

Now Just hold up a minute here people! lets not start getting out of hand here. Firstly I'm happy for Andrew to be the leader of the invisible armies even though it was me who declared war. Secondly, let's not lose sight of the fact that these powers (invisibility and flight) are the only single additional powers we have and thus, when the fliers are walking and the invisibles are opaque, we are no different from other humans. The fliers can only fly at the average speed of, say a fast run and don't have wings, it's more of a superman flight developed from a jump. Breathing and pressure and temperature are all real factors as they are now. Us invisibles can turn it on and off and our clothes are invisible too so perhaps it comes from some kind of invisibility lotion or magnetic field, who knows? what, therefore, we really need to establish for both camps is the physicality of each power and it's development into flight and invisibility. AND the reasons given should be plausible and based in some kind of science. the physics of flight are easier to establish than invisibility but we are writers are we not.

Sod altruism. See how far invisibility gets you if you fall off a cliff. About as far as the ground, I'd wager.
ély whítléy
Anonymous's picture
hmmm, yeah but the 'falling off a cliff' threat is one we already live with, it's not as though invisibility will make us any less scared of cliff edges. unless you're thinking of the opposite of invisibility which could conceivably be blindness. Now THAT brings the whole cliff issue to the fore. Think of the practicalities as I have stated earlier and Andrew has reitterated. for example, it was pissing down all day today, it's hard enough to see where you're going when on foot but if you tried to fly in that you'd hit the first house you missed (if you know what I mean) then there's temperature, you'd need loads of layers of clothes on in Winter etc etc. The reality of being able to fly but still being a normal human being is that it amounts to being dragged behind a plane on a rope... not nice at all. As for altruism, you'd get shot down in ten minutes by whoever saw you coming if you tried to stop terrorism for example whereas invisibility could get you right to the heart of things and stop a lot of trouble with info from Bin Laden's den perhaps OH ALRIGHT!! you'd have to do something about making a noise and leaving footprints and not bumping into anything or farting etc I was being pedantic too BEYONCÉ I'm coming!!

Can't stop to talk, Ely - I have just located important evidence of invisible beings in Cro-Magnon time, namely cave paintings clearly showing cavemen throwing spears at said invisible beasts. Of course, sceptics are claiming that these are just badly aimed spears at the mammoths also pictured, but I am not so easily foxed...

yes but if your invisible john would it really matter how you looked - I mean we could sit here playing - in loads of warm water whilst they battle this out One of us could sneak out every now and then, to top up on goodies included the odd drink and no one would be any the wiser

That's a point - hang on - we might walk into each knocking ourselves out and drown Glad that you can't see me - I wouldn't want to scare you to death Tell you what we need some kind of protection from walking into other invisible people - maybe we should have some kind of invisible field detector around each person so that rings if you should get near someone else whose invisible, thus giving you time to move away or stop if you know what I mean or has some one else already suggested this? whose going for the goodies first and could you get me a strong drink I could do with one - I've had a bad day and your not to ask

of course this ringing should only be heard by the individual concerned otherwise it would be pointless being invisible wouldn't it ?

Can you switch the invisibility on and off at will? What about if you're unconscious? What if you trip over a pothole whilst invisible and end up lying, invisible, in the middle of the road? You'd get mashed by cars and start creating an invisible smell after a few days. Clearly, if you could fly, you'd have to use it sensibly. And I assumed that it would constitute a kind of full body levitation, so you weren't being yanked along by, say, your flying nose or something. Just think about it. It would be like really convenient hanggliding.
