Clicking on Entertainment

My mum has a theory. She's a very charitable, compassionate person but she reckons that we humans weren't meant to know about all the misery the whole world over. She says that prior to technological inventions, we only had to worry about events in our immediate environment and that that is the level we have the capacity to cope with. I like this theory ' not because I think it's true particularly, but because it makes me feel better when I click on a couple of dire headlines on the BBC News website then rather guiltily click on Entertainment.

Over here, they show series that deal with all the shitey things that can happen in life, and ironically these series are the most popular. Is it really the case that misery sells?

I subscribe to your mum's theory! I have to admit to mostly 'switching off' whenever something miserable comes on the news. On account of the fact that I probably can't do anything about it and it'll only depress me. :-) * P * :-)
