NOT a re-opening of the smoking ban thread

Just trawled through the entirity of the smoking ban thread wot I started, in between fiddling with stupendously boring spreadsheets.

Cripes!

Not 'arf... (and all that)...

As Radio Denver said once or twice... better than television!

What controversial topic can I open up for debate next? The issue of smelly people on public transport? The offensiveness of less-than-attractive midriffs? The annoyance of dirty PC monitors?

Feel free to comment on any of the above...

Controlled parking zones. I don't understand what they are but every time I read a local paper everyone seems to be very angry about them.

I would like the road outside my house to be a controlled parking zone, well a permit holder only zone. During the day is impossible to park because it is close to the town centre and the seafront, aha, free parking, think the holidaymakers, then at night the bingo grannies arrive en masse. I certainly wouldn't mind paying for a permit that would allow me to park outside my own house now and then.
I'm not sure what they are either. Is it only for those drivers who park calmly.
Resident permits only work if they're enforced, this would require the local council to patrol the streets in a wrecker truck and tow away vehicles parked without the necessary permit. My limited experience has been that the local council doesn't care. This is best exemplified by cars being abandoned, stickered with "Police Aware" and then left for weeks with an expired tax disc and blown tyres. In the US, here, the local municipal department will tow away a vehicle within 48 hours of its being found to be "abandoned".
