The Sun Shines This Way

When he closed his eyes he was no longer Matthew Saunders, patient 1539A of room 32B, he was the nine-year old Air Captain of the American Airforce. He sat in a large television box and surveyed the Atlantic which was the living room floor. The flaps of the box were the wings of the plane and he tilted them to either side whenever he made sharp turns. The afternoon sun lit the Atlantic and today it looked like the skies were clear.

Robbers and Robber Barons

The Photograph

The baby's eyes would be closed and a bubble of spit would pulse at the baby's mouth. Then grandpa would caress the underside of the baby's chin with his finger and the baby would wake. Grandpa would almost cry at having seen that the baby had inherited his wife's gray eyes. She hadn't lived long enough to touch American shores and now this baby”small and tender and immaculate was the last living trace of her.

Fathers and Sons

Henry hadn't felt any pain or sorrow until the plane flew above Redding, New York. He saw the greenish-blue clock tower where his father worked for more than two years to afford Medical School while raising Henry with his mother in a poor but quiet neighborhood. Because the work had a great amount of downtime his father had taken him along many times and in the afternoon they ate lunch at a restaurant across from the tower.
