Margaret Atwood (2010) The Handmaid’s Tale, Vintage Books

I’ve got a crap memory. I kept trying to remember Offred’s real name before she became a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. I don’t know if the book told me and I forgot or the book never told me and I never forgot, but forgot not to remember. I’ve read the book before but couldn’t remember what happened. In truth nothing much happens but everything changes. Women become things. Men remain men and battle for status and power all in the name of...

Stephen Grosz (2013) The Examined Life How We Lose and Find Ourselves.

Sometime I think about how people’s names suit their jobs. I used to have a writing tutor called Elizabeth Reeder. I probably spelled her name wrong, but it wasn’t her fault. Grosz would understand. He’s distilled over 50 000 hours of psychoanalytical insight into just over 200 pages. I’ve just read it in one gulp and I’m cured. I understand myself better and I understand humanity. The only difference between me and you is I’m better looking and...

Matt Bondurant (2010) The Wettest Country in the World.

The author describes this as ‘A Novel Based On A True Story.’ The true story is The Great Moonshine Conspiracy of 1935. The true story is of the great depression and Prohibition and of dirt poor farmers scrambling to get enough to eat and keep their land. The true story is of the author’s forefathers and their family: Granville Bondurant who on the death of his wife, sons and daughter in the great flu epidemic of 1919 claimed: ‘All the goodness...

i remember a friend and i were at the lookout spot in our area. you know what i’m talking about. every neighborhood has one. it’s the spot that everyone knows but no one tells, where the sun sets behind urban silhouettes. it’s the spot, the sacred spot where dreams are wished upon and futures are seen and pasts are forgotten and remembered all at the same time. we sat on the hills, our feet snug in half-pipe drains and looked at the skyline. the...

Sugarman

Last summer I put up a forum topic about a film that I'd seen. It was a documentary about a singer/songwriter called Rodriguez. It was called " Searching for Sugar Man". I couldn't give it enough praise. I thought it was brilliant. Last month it won a Bafta for best Documentary film and last weekend it won the Oscar in the same category. It's a true story of Rodriguez. In 1970 he recorded an album in Detroit, it may have sold six copies. But one...

One day i hope to meet someone who will share with me a true story of love without sorrow.

Silence.

I wish i could tell you of how i really feel about you, and how every time i see you, i can barely hold back the desire to take you into my arms, kiss you and never let go. Every time we talk, and laugh, every time we are together, those unintentional physical contacts, like your hand brushing a against my arm, when our fingers touch as i pass you your cup of coffee, and those intentional ones, yet still innocent, as i smooth back a stray strand...

A Fine Finish

Well, Rio came third. Thats two runs and two thirds. Very pleased as he was up against strong competition and ran on well. He needs a longer trip as he looks an out and out stayer. So will run him over a longer distance next time. Great day!
