storing stories

Is there a way to make a list of favourite pieces, on the site? I keep finding stuff I want to be able to read again but have trouble remembering titles. Or, if there isn't a "favourites" bit, would it be OK to copy works off the site into a file on my computer or does that infringe copywrite?

My bookmarked stories would work for what you want. Look up there to your right just above Write drop down menu. That's where they're stored. To bookmark something or to read something bookmarked, you must be logged in. Click on the bookmark option at the bottom of the piece you want to come back to.

I can see the 'My bookmarked stories' link but I cannot find how to boomark a piece  In the FAQ this is what it's said:
When you are logged in to the site, you can check your bookmarks by clicking 'My bookmarked stories' in the 'Read' column, or by navigating here: http://www.abctales.com/read/bookmarked.When you find a page you would like to come back to later, all you need to do is click the 'bookmark' link at the bottom of the piece. It's as simple as that!It is also possible to turn off the 'bookmark' function by editing your personal preferences (see 14)
There is no 'bookmark' link at the bottom of my pieces. If this function has been turned off, how do I edit 'my personal preferences'?

Are you logged in? (Why would you bookmark your own pieces, anyway?)

If I could send you a screen shot  I would. "Bookmark" is the left of three red inked words below the facebook and twitter icons just below the piece you want to bookmark.

If you still can't see it, I don't know. I can't see anything on account preferences/details page to check/uncheck.

Perhaps I didn't phrase my comment correctly, Ewan. I don't want to 'bookmark' my own pieces; I just assumed that that link would appear at the bottom of everyone's submissions

I am logged in and looking at other author's work , including your latest 'Fistulous Withers'. All I get is Like and follow me.

I'd like to know if I am the only one who is bereft of this facility.

I don't know. The only other person who couldn't find it today was suffering caffeine deficiency and has found it.
Probably the person who compiled the source for the site might know, but I've no idea who that was.

I've thought of a few user accounts to look at to see what's what, but I doubt that I'll be able to help further.

Addendum: I've looked at about 25 different writers' work and the bookmark option is on all of them.

Perhaps I should address my question to Di_Hard who started this topic. Can you please check whether you can see a 'bookmark' link at the bottom of any pieces?

By the way, I don't think you would be infringing any copyright by copying stories to your computer for your personal use unless somebody else has access to it and be able to extract that information.

Hi Luigi

It's all very odd - I've checked your pieces and the Bookmark tab is definitely there, and it works.  I checked my own to make sure that it's not just a case of not being able to see it on your own work, but it is there on mine.  Hope this reassures you, though - other people can definitely see it on your work.  Completely stumped as to why you can't see it.

Very puzzling, Jane. It must have been erased during one of the many updates ABC has undergone. I am not worried as I am not likely to use that function but it would be interesting to know the reason. I did a screen print and pasted it here but although it showed in the comment box, when I pressed OK it disappeared. Another peculiarity but never mind, it doesn't matter.

Many thanks to you and Ewan for your help..

It's very odd that you can't see it Luigi. Even I can, now I've had enough coffee! If it was a site-change problem it would be the same for everyone, and it isn't

For the sceptics I have put a screen print here: https://www.abctales.com/story/luigipagano/no-bookmark-flag-test-only

I too can only see 'Like' and 'Follow me' on stories, no 'Bookmark story' tab to be seen. Rhiannon

Ewan, thankyou so much for your advice! Like Luigi I have just "Like" and "Follow Me" under the piece of writing? My Wizzo Computer Genius has looked at it and has suggested it might be the browser? I'm on Firefox. Luigi is that your browser?

Firefox is my browser, and I cant find a 'Bookmark' tab. Rhiannon

Yes I have Firefox but I've tried Internet Explorer and I can't even see 'Like' and 'follow me'.

I'm so sorry you're all having such problems - I'm using safari as a browser but am fairly sure airy doesn't use that. I will do some more digging and try to solve the issue!

I have also tried Chrome with the same result: nothing shows, not even 'Like' and 'follow me'.
I had an idea; perhaps only the editors have that privilege,

That's something I thought too  Luigi - so I will do an experiment tomorrow!

I mainly use Edge, but I've also tried it on Chrome and still have the tab.  You've unearthed a mystery for us, Luigi!

Are you one of the editors, Jane? If so see my suggestion above.

So it turns out, Luigi, that you were right, and the bookmark function is currently only available to editors. I'm not sure if this was always the case. Perhaps someone who isn't an editor could tell me if they used it in the past.

Anyway Di, thank you for raising this - it would be great if we could all use the function, and I will mention it to the techies

I had been suspecting it was only available to editors, too. But as we all have a link under 'Read' marked 'My bookmarked stories' which when clicked on says (for me anyway) 'You haven't bookmarked anything!' then presumably we are supposed to have this facility? Rhiannon

Insert has said that she thinks it used to be available to all. (I admit, I didn't notice its presence or absence when I came back to ABC after some time away). Maybe there was a reason to change that, if so. Regardless, any change to the site's source code/HTML can have unintended consequences, so it may not even have been a deliberate withdrawal of privileges. However, the technical people will have to be approached to sort it out and I imagine that will cost money. We'll have to wait and see.

Thank you, I'm not sure I would use the facility, and presumably it hasn't been missed, so maybe nobody's been using it. I just felt probably the link 'My bookmarked stories' maybe ought to be removed if it's not working?! Rhiannon

I agree with Rhiannon that we ought to remove that link especially as we can bookmark any ABC pieces on our own browser. I have tried it on Firefox.

Thankyou Luigi, I will do that.

Thankyou Insert and Ewan for looking into it
