Thanks Highhat - I'm enjoying the site so far. It's not something I've done before, but it's grabbed me. It's interesting to read other people's writing - a lot of it is of a high standard, which is daunting, but inspiring.
I'm coming from Surrey. Not too far. I haven't been to one of these events before, so I am a little in the dark as to what goes on.
I'm going to attempt a reading. Tony informed me that people read for eight minutes. Given that what I've written is the start of a novel, do I have to read the first chapter? Or, could I read from another chapter and say a few words to put it into context?
Any advice appreciated.

Thanks for all of the advice.
I'm sure I'll find my way there and that it will prove to be an interesting experience.
Tony emailed to ask if I would read and I said that I would make an attempt. I am not the world's best public speaker, so it will be good for me to do it.
It may have to be a chapter because I haven't written any poetry in a long time and what I've written previously is, probably, rather poor.
Looking forward to it - I think...

Don't worry Mike, you will get a warm welcome ans, as far as I'm aware, nobody has been pelted with rotten tomatoes...yet.
I'm going to read a chapter at the York night just give a very brief who's who and what's what before you begin.

Hard to say really. I read. No one threw things at me. I'm not a very confident public speaker, but I gave it a go.
Some of the other readers were excellent - I really enjoyed listening to them. At least I've broken my cherry.
Are you doing York?
I think everyone is allowed the odd wobble. I have to speak in public all the time for my job, but I dislike doing it out of that context. If you wobble, you're human.
Hope York goes really well and that people have a successful evening. Looking forward to meeting more ABC people in the future.
I think the wobble is more interesting, you don't want to be a cherry-picking robot. There are lots of polished performers but too much polish you might just end up like Michael (uggh) McEntirely ****, a wobbly bouffant and a smile and incredibly wealthy!
