Guilty Pleasures

There is a cd out on the 23rd August which contains the songs we love, but dont admit to...

Now isn't that a stonking cd? I think this is a great idea, and as such, have now made my own... this probably reveals my age as well as my dodgy taste, here are the tracks I have picked... what I want to know, is what will be on your guilty cd? Come on, skeletons out of the cupboards you lot...

We each have our ways Andrew. I take no responsibility for the differences in spelling. I will;however, take responsibility for my behavior. The road runs both ways though. Why should one recognize the manners of another when they aren't afforded the same in return. Over here it could be considered bad manners to lecture people on proper manners and to offer unsolicited advice, sort of "snobbish and controlling, self absorbed, nit-picking, pain-in-the-ass, call it what you like thing", but I understand this; I just choose to ignore it. We also have a thing called freedom of speech, a concept foreign to many parts of the world, but very very well practiced in this country. This has the unfortunate side effect of being perceived as bad manners by the above mentioned types, as we have a tendency to not waste time painting shit.

We understand freedom of speech, (we have it too) but we also understand that this freedom is a precious thing which affects the feelings of others... you are behaving like the (I believe unfair) stereotypical idea of an American who just shouts louder "cause it's damned well his right to say what the goddamned hell he likes". Guess what? It's not your right. You have no right to do that. And whilst I'm at it, why do you keep saying I nitpick? I think I corrected your spelling once, in a jokey way... certainly can't remember any other occasion. The only time I was sharp with you, was when you were phenomenally rude to someone who merely (and politely) expressed a differing opinion to yours. I don't like that. I wasn't on my own... Neil is a gentle soul and has NEVER deserved to be told he was a pile of shit (or whatever your words were, I imagine nothing more literary than that). You disagree with someone, then they have their head up their ass. They are masturbating, whatever - it's puerile, and you do your nation no favours. No wonder some americans are more hated in the rest of the world than any other nation, if this is the level of debate you typically manage... I would like to think that the Americans that I know and admire are not the exception to the rule, but you're rudeness and arrogance does nothing to convince me otherwise... if this is not the type of man you are, then I really can't imagine why you continue slogging away at putting such an unflattering portrayal of yourself on the forums. Now really... I've said it all. I know that you will riposte with some facile marriage/sex/notebook attempt at humour, so really - thanks, but I'll pass.

Well, now we're getting somewhere.... You are absolutely correct about one thing Liana, I am behaving exactly like the stereotypical American to you, and quite on purpose I may add. I'm trying to live up to your every expectation Liana. What I have discovered quite effortlessly, is that it is impossible to meet your expectations. I started a thread on this very subject, which nobody seemed interested in, but for some reason has now become a matter of personal interest for you. Fine by me, we can talk about it here if you like or not at all if you like. If you want to trade insults, we can do that, if you want to take an open mind and explore different points of view, we can do that too, doesn’t matter to me, I'll be doing something better later on that's for sure. The only conversations I recall having with you was when you were rude to me (by my standards) and I responded in kind (by my standards), I just didn't follow the English rule of manners, I used an American rule of which you know very little about apparently. Is it possible that you've lost sight of something. This is the "World Wide Web", not London. Oh, the owner and operator is based in London, the bulk of the users are in England, but we're not hanging around the local pub dear. Any monkey with a computer can talk to any other monkey with a computer. If you think everybody is going to fit into your little mold of propriety, you're deluding yourself.

now this is difficult because I'm actually proud of most songs I like and many of them are pretty cheesy but the ones I tend to keep under my hat are cheese on toast, such as: Butterfly of love- Val Doonican streets of Loredo- Frankie Lane (I think) The Devil went down to Georgia- some bloke who plays a fiddle Necessary you- Robbie Williams I'll be there- the Jackson 5 I Owe you nothing- BROS!!!!!!!!! More than words- Extreme aint goin' down till the sun comes up- Garth Brooks Ace of spades- Motorhead (just the best goddam rock track of all time but I don't like heavy metal) Pretty Vacant- Sex Pistols. (I hate myself for this because I think they were utter garbage but it doesn't stop me snarling over a hairbrush in front of a bedroom mirror when it's on!)

Have to think about this for a CD worth, but Ring Ring by ABBA makes me feel v. happy and Islands in the something or other, stream? Kenny and Dolly. Fab. Plus Garth Brooks The Dance. Glen Campbell that one about a linesman Bread - oh dear Moonlight shadow - luv it The Living Years - Mike and the Mechanics, can't sing along to this one for long, the lyrics make me cry Is Kate Bush naff now or am I still okay with anything off of Hounds of Love? easier than I thought...

moonlight shadow makes me want to MURDER... i lived in spain at the back of a clubin the early eighties, and it was one of three records that the dj had... carried away by a moonlight shadow... aaarghhhhhhh i wish it would be. REO Speedwagon - mmmmm lovely, Bread, great. Ring Ring is going on this third cd.

Oh, you have to forgive me...I'm only just starting to listen to any non-classical stuff after a 10 year gap...that's why a lot of it is so modern...trying to catch up a bit (impossible). But Diana Krall's is timeless..and many of mine are not 'modern' are they??? S & G and Leonard Cohen??? Hey...my pop music appreciation stopped when I moved to Asia at age 13, I lived in a vacuum then as far as British pop was concerned...most of what I heard was American or the odd recommendation from friends from back home who bothered to write to me. This was before the communication revolution!! I had to transfer all my albums and singles onto tape before we went...and inevitably they got tired. I had no access to pop news or gossip etc. I know nothing, therefore...I will have heard so much but will never have a clue who it is.

I do usually smack Whiskey in the jar on a pub jukebox, and it always sounds great. So much better than The Boys are back in Town (which always reminds me of dubious FA Cup Fourth Round features on Football Focus "Andy Barrington, of Mintchester works during the week as a postman and also dabbles in making gravestones as a hobby, and he'll be hoping to deliver some quality crosses in the match too..." - they use it as soundtrack at any half-arsed opportunity) Just like Radio Ga-Ga always reminds me of stodgy Liverpool stalwart Ronnie Whelan...

Steve - I used to share a house with a bloke who was in Golden Earring... it's a great song. More than a Feeling is fabulous, and is on my fourth cd.. despite andrew taking the mickey out of it last time I mentioned it. It's just so... ROUSING isn't it? Oh, and Mott the Hoople... yum. This is the problem. I've got a complete collection of Britney Spears albums, TaTu, Shakira, Fragma, Alex Parks, more Country and Western than you can shake a stick at including The Louvin brothers - Satan Is Real, German beer drinking songs, a rackful of Japanese pop princesses, some godawful heavy metal, lots of twiddly oirish folk, the Crockodile Dundee soundtrack, and an album of pan pipe music from that band that plays every town center in the country. And I don't feel remotely guilty.
