I write all sorts, some of it SF, urban fantasy and horror, a lot of it not. Sometimes I can even be funny, so I'm told. My short stories have appeared in the anthologies 'Cold Iron: Ghost Stories from the 21st Century' (Iron Press) and 'Science Fiction For Survival: An Archive For Mars' (Valley Press), as well as in magazines ranging from the literary magazine 'Dreamcatcher' to 'Writing Magazine' and 'The People's Friend' (the latter definitely not SF, urban fantasy or horror). I do regular local spoken word events, and needless to say there is a novel on the go. Do come and have a peep at the blogs, stories and audio at https://www.janeayrie.com - you can even go mad and sign up for my newsletter! Plus the usual social media stuff. All details below. Thanks for dropping in! (Oh, the picture is of my highly critical personal editor.)

I enjoyed this.  Very visceral, and the physical descriptions are particularly good.  Anna's character is also well drawn at the beginning.  I wasn't quite sure about the final paragraph.  I...

The structure really does

Posted on Wed, 26 Aug 2015

The structure really does work with the content.  The poem grabs you and won't let go.  The sadness, the disappointment, the despair, all conveyed with precision but no loss of emotion.  I am glad to hear you found it therapeutic to write.  It...

Very interesting ideas - when

Posted on Thu, 25 Jun 2015

Very interesting ideas - when gods do not want to be gods.  Another thing I like is that I still cannot see how it is going to turn out, which is really good and keeping me hooked.  One small typo - I assume you meant 'veracity' rather than '...

Posted on Thu, 25 Jun 2015

This is very good.  I love horror stories but they're so difficult to get right.  This one works because of the tropes Stephen has already mentioned, drawing you in, initially making you smile and relax a bit, then adding to the insistence and...

The way you build up the

Posted on Fri, 26 Jun 2015

The way you build up the tension, and set up so many questions about how this is going to resolve (or not) is so impressive, and all the details of Dave's 'safe space' bring the situation so alive.  It's genuinely heartbreaking.  Great piece.

I saw something like this

Posted on Fri, 26 Jun 2015

I saw something like this once as a child, never since, and you've brought that magical moment back so vividly.  And I loved 'pert as the nipples of a fool-hardy dipper' - wonderful image!

Posted on Sat, 13 Jun 2015

Got interrupted when making my last comment...meant also to say that I really liked the way you joined up the idea of sacrifice, from both sides and for the same purposes, at the end.  Cracking  last line, raising some good questions and making...

A real mixture of SF, myth and fantasy.  Every chapter is bringing a new surprise, just when you think you're gettng a handle on it.  Enjoying this more as it goes on!

Really hitting your stride with this now.  The writing feels a lot more comfortable and the ideas are opening up.
