Hello! I am an old crone who very much enjoys reading SF, urban fantasy and horror. I write all sorts, some of it SF, urban fantasy and horror, a lot of it not. Sometimes I can even be funny, so I'm told. My short stories have appeared in the anthologies 'Cold Iron: Ghost Stories from the 21st Century' (Iron Press) and 'Science Fiction For Survival: An Archive For Mars' (Valley Press), as well as in magazines ranging from the literary magazine 'Dreamcatcher' to 'Writing Magazine' and 'The People's Friend' (the latter definitely not SF, urban fantasy or horror). I do regular local spoken word events, and needless to say there is a novel on the go. My new website is currently under construction, and you are cordially invited to come and have a peep at the blogs and free stories there. You can even go mad and sign up for my newsletter! Plus the usual social media stuff. All details below. Thanks for dropping in! (Oh, the picture is of my highly critical personal editor.)

Sad but with the re-emergence

Posted on Mon, 08 Feb 2016

Sad but with the re-emergence of hope at the end.  Oh, the way we sabotage ourselves by listening to others!   I found this very moving.

Posted on Mon, 04 Jan 2016

I loved this.  Despite the title I didn't see it coming, and I think it's a brilliant idea.  I think my poor wardrobe must see itself more as a carer in an old folks' home...

Trying to pick out, as one

Posted on Sun, 25 Oct 2015

Trying to pick out, as one does, the 'I particularly liked...' bit, and I can't, because each paragraph is so rich and multi-layered.  Just blown away by the way you use words to envoke feelings, sensations, physical textures and so many vivid...

It's the same anmesia you get

Posted on Tue, 15 Sep 2015

It's the same anmesia you get with childbirth.  It hurts like hell at the time, but somehow, a little while later, it all seems like a terribly good idea again...

Enjoyed and empathised with this!

I've read this several times

Posted on Mon, 14 Sep 2015

I've read this several times and appreciated it more each time.  In its dissection of the way people are brutalised in war it held echoes, for me, of the WW1 war poets.  Disturbing look at the questions of how and why people can do such things to...

Subtle and sad. Such effective imagery, especially with the daisies at the end.  It's only when you reach the second part of the poem that you realise the current of unease has been there all along.

Intriguing.  Strong

Posted on Wed, 09 Sep 2015

Intriguing.  Strong descriptions - the grey of things and the houses as 'almost protecting'.  The hints that this is not the first time for this scenario.   Is this stand alone or will we find out more?  I hope more! Welcome to ABC Tales.

Wonderful use of language.

Posted on Mon, 31 Aug 2015

Wonderful use of language.  That opening paragraph has the reader hooked, and the image of palms of velcro is so very evocative.  The final paragraph hints at all the emotional turmoil experience says is to come.  Acutely observed.

And I've always been rather fond of liver...

I enjoyed this.  Very visceral, and the physical descriptions are particularly good.  Anna's character is also well drawn at the beginning.  I wasn't quite sure about the final paragraph.  I...

The structure really does

Posted on Wed, 26 Aug 2015

The structure really does work with the content.  The poem grabs you and won't let go.  The sadness, the disappointment, the despair, all conveyed with precision but no loss of emotion.  I am glad to hear you found it therapeutic to write.  It...
