A traveller from a distant land is walking through the grounds of an overgrown kingdom when he comes across an old king weeping by a well.

Going Home

Standing outside the train station in a foreign city, there in the growing dark, considering his whole life like a journey that, somehow, had just gone wrong.

The Window

Two weeks after we moved into our new home, I saw him for the first time. I was sixteen years old, bored out of my head, stuck in a new town with just my parents for company. And then I saw him.

The Oak Tree

There was never enough light in this house, no matter how bright the sunshine was outside. The hallway was the same dark green it had been the day I'd bundled my hastily packed rucksack out of the door vowing never to return. So many shadows here and that smell: medicine and over-cooked food lingering in the thick, dark air. The clatter of crockery from the kitchen where my mother was preparing the tea.
