Darjeeling is a small town about 7000 feet from sea level. Most of the ordinary people work in the world-famous tea gardens. The rest are engaged in the booming tourism industry.Few hill stations in india are as idyllic and picturesque as Darjeeling.People from all over india and beyond visit this wonderful town to enjoy its unique sights and unmatched scenery. However the locals are themselves crazy about cricket. In particular the Camellia Cup.

Leather Lovers' Society
This happened when I was very young.I was about ten and very naughty.I would run about quite a lot.In the process I would wear out my shoes very often. My clothes would tear here and there.Despite the fact that buying new clothes and shoes was not a monetary problem for my parents they insisted that I learn to value the things I owned.Wel,my shoes suffered the most because I would use them very clumsily. When climbing a staircase I would jump two to three steps together all the while kicking hard at the walls.Though I had special shoes for playing soccer I would go to play in my school leather boots. These boots were not meant to stand such stress and strain and they did not.I would also use my boots to play what was known as 'stone cricket'.This involved using the boots as bat and stones from somewhere as ball.Naturally my shoes would last must much less than they were supposed to.I was least bothered about this because in my thinking shoes WERE supposed to be used thus.

Just for fun
Somewhere between Darjeeling and Calcutta is a place called Sevoke Bridge. It is certainly what it purports to be-a mere bridge. It is early winter now and a Scorpio is making its way over the bridge. The Scorpio is actually a grand-looking SUV.This particular car has five people sitting in it.As the Scorpio is about to descend into the freeway the driver spots a girl. The girl is wearing expensive clothes and is trying to secure a ride on the car.Half out of pity and half out of a very ancient instinct the driver stops the car.The girl explains that she lives in Darjeeling and is trying to get some medicines for her ailing father from nearby Tenzing Stand. The passengers who have all paid the driver individually for the ride are happy to accomodate a very pretty girl. The girl tries to make small talk.Suddenly she produces a revolver and asks her co-passengers to hand over their belongings. The passengers, who are all men, offer little resistance. One of them stays with her after he introduces himself as her husband. After the others are offloaded at Tenzing Stand the girl tells the lanky boy,"You drive!".It is apparent that the girl doesn't know how to steer an automobile. As the vehicle speeds off towards Calcutta the two passengers introduce themselves to each other. The boy is called Bunty and the pretty girl is Bubbles. Both have set out from Darjeeling with the aim of becoming filmstars in distant Bombay.

In the boondocks...
The phone rang loudly at 12, Roxham Close, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. It was a Sunday morning and the Banerjis were still fast asleep. And it was nine am. Mrs Annie Banerjee managed to get up from bed and pick up the receiver. It was a call from Oil Dooars, West Bengal, India. Mr Jim Banerjee had come to Halifax from Oil Dooars looking for a job. He was fortunate to find the Sens who had migrated to Canada some thirty years before. He lived as a paying guest with the Sen family for a good five years. During this time he worked in a well-known hospital. Jim Banerjee was a doctor who had got his medical training at North Bengal Medical College. The day Jim became deputy RMO at his hospital he asked Annie Sen to marry him. And she said yes. Mr and Mrs Sen were completely against the match. Jim was after all from an obscure village in India and Annie had grown up in a modern city like Halifax. But Annie was adamant. She actually ran away from home to marry Jim in court. As per law he became a Canadian citizen thereafter. People expected him to become tyrannical but he changed very little.
