I live in a village near Cambridge and close to St Ives where my wife and I (with our Spaniel) enjoy country walking. When we can get away it is to the coast or up north and to Scotland, where I find my ancestral roots. I have dual Aussie and British nationality, from when I lived in Oz; and I’ve been fortunate (when younger) to have travelled through Asia to Europe; I’ve also spent time in Canada and the USA.

I’ve worked for the Aussie and local British governments, now gladly retired. My inner journey has taken me via the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Quakers, a Buddhist Monk, Christian monasticism, then a Catholic, finally to end up at our local Anglican church; now I’m content to let the mystery be!

I’ve been writing poetry for more than thirty years, so there is hope for me yet. My influences are from the lyrical tradition with some attempt at metre and rhyme. I don’t compose anything quickly, preferring to slowly craft my lines, the result being my own style and not what I’d consider to be in the contemporary fashion. What skill I possess seems to be more in shorter poems.

Slipping into the Water

Our close friends now have to live with early Alzheimers; and he is suffering as much as she, while we look on and do all we can to help and support.

Nativity

An old poem I've revised for Christmas.; and by way of my greeting to all at ABCtales, not least our editorial team who keep this ship afloat. So may you all have a blessed Christmas and a peaceful New Year; as we can hope for 2024 for our conflicted world. Dougie

Rain in Kalgoorlie

Reading some of the poems, and just walking around our village, reminds me of how much we associate rain as a winter condition; that prompted me to find this old poem, to give an aternative, where rain (as I well remember) is a god-send. (Image courtesy of Wikimedia Commons)

All Souls Shall Arise

I composed this two nights ago, in response to having heard that a poet friend is now treminally ill. It is still a work in progress. (image courtesy of Wikimedia Commons: detail of a painting by John Thomas)

Yes, I agree, it benefits

Posted on Mon, 05 Feb 2024

Yes, I agree, it benefits from several readings and how one interprets it; for myself it reminded me of Crossing The Bar, which I recited once at a funeral; and of course - a lovely poem, congratulations Jane.

I love your use of language

Posted on Fri, 26 Jan 2024

I love your use of language Paul - creating the imagery, of our cold January, the words rustling and foreshadowing the return of spring.

We missed the 25th due to cloud, but this morning there she was - huge over the fens; and I thought of your poem, such ethereal language and imagery, so perfect for us Paul - a good one!

Thank you Di. We are blessed

Posted on Tue, 23 Jan 2024

Thank you Di. We are blessed with our bird life. My wife and I this morning while on our walk watched transfixed as two Woodpeckers swooped through the bare branches of trees. I would say that these were the Great Spotted type.

I loved the ominous imagery here; and the onion juice metaphor works so well.
