Slipping into the Water

He fears she is slipping away,
Slipping into the water.
And though he takes
his stand on dry land,
he cannot hold her there,
For she’s slipping away
Into the water.
And no matter how he tries
To hold her there,
He cannot hold her
Above the water.
And he knows
That one day
She’ll slip away,
Until she merges,
Becoming one
With the water.

These are excellent words. I think back to elderly people I have known and your poem describes perfectly how I remember them being gradually taken from family and friends and from life itself. Nothing can stop that slipping.
Good on you!

It is a slow bereavement and loss. Usually the persons affected seem happy, though maybe not when it is starting and they are aware of confusion, but it helps if they are seen to be relatively happy. But difficult for those who are friends and family, and long to be able to share still. Rhiannon

A friend from my writing
A friend from my writing group's wife is suffering with alzheimers. He had to move out of the house on doctor's orders because of how she gets. Thankfully, after weeks of wrangling, the council have finally agreed to arrange for her to be cared for in a home. It's a truly debilitating disease. You capture it so well with the analogy of slipping under water. Nicely done, Doug.
