I live in a village near Cambridge and close to St Ives where my wife and I (with our Spaniel) enjoy country walking. When we can get away it is to the coast or up north and to Scotland, where I find my ancestral roots. I have dual Aussie and British nationality, from when I lived in Oz; and I’ve been fortunate (when younger) to have travelled through Asia to Europe; I’ve also spent time in Canada and the USA.
I’ve worked for the Aussie and local British governments, now gladly retired. My inner journey has taken me via the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Quakers, a Buddhist Monk, Christian monasticism, then a Catholic, finally to end up at our local Anglican church; now I’m content to let the mystery be!
I’ve been writing poetry for more than thirty years, so there is hope for me yet. My influences are from the lyrical tradition with some attempt at metre and rhyme. I don’t compose anything quickly, preferring to slowly craft my lines, the result being my own style and not what I’d consider to be in the contemporary fashion. What skill I possess seems to be more in shorter poems.

And how did that cowed group of frightened grief stricken men and women suddenly begin proclaiming the Good News?

A lovely lyrical poem that captures the beat of the drum, and we should remember that the drum was probably our first musical instrument - beating in the outside air. And congrats for the golden cherries Jenny

Interesting poem Ewan. Women assumed leading roles in the early church, an example being that of Pheobe, who Paul addresses (in Romans 16 1-2) as diakonos (deakon). And Jesus was notable for encouraging women as disciples - to the outrage of the...

Good one Rhiannon. And I blame diminishing attention spans, plus the quick soundbites, clickbates, and the loss of social graces.

I usually struggle with prose

I usually struggle with prose, but this flowed so well, and it took me along easily; and I liked how the reader can make their own judgement; a well deserved golden cherries.

Oh Jenny! This is so true for me as well. How many times have I had a line or phrase come to me in the night, then thinking I'll write it down in the morning, but then morning comes and the words have melted. The answer is to get up and write it...

A delightful poem. I first read the moon maiden story you gave as a link; and then the poem worked even more for me. The language and imagery evoked a Japanese feeling; congratulations Paul

A really good poem, like this
Posted on Fri, 15 Mar 2024
A really good poem, like this one, is written both from the heart and from experience; and no wonder that the golden cherries and pick of the day have been awarded. I read it as it unfolded easily, until that tragic ending, I can only say thank...
