your poem made me think of The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. You have given a much earlier example of the consequences of choice, brilliantly simple and touching, too

You explain the confusion and worry very well. Never really knowing if you were dreaming or not, and in bad dreams even people we know well can act out of character, seem frightening. And you were probably on edge to start with, being in a ward...
