Fantastic imagination, much enjoyed. Possibly trimming some of the descriptive words/-ly adverbs early on would help it flow better (we're told his lamp is powerful twice). Adding hyphens to your compound adjectives (melon-sized, cave-like)...

Great piece, quietly affecting and great wee details throughout, flaked almonds on the train, rolling cigarettes, really effective in giving life to all the different characters. Nice optimistic touch at the end. Much enjoyed reading

Good work Hilary, clipped along at an engaging pace. I liked some of the touches throughout, 'in his mind he had many demons', and 'she wasn't letting him take control'. The latter was a strong, sudden, chilling sentence.
