This piece of flash fiction was inspired partly by a report of an atrocity committed by the German forces in Poland in 1942, in which a baby was kicked to death. This is of course the stuff of nightmares, but after the war those responsible had to try to come to terms with their crimes, and adapt to changing conditions.

Please note this was written in 1998, about mid-way through the Taleban regime.
