1 Constantine delved into the top draw of the battered reading desk until he found the old Bible, its red leather faded and worn. He took it in his trembling hands, blood smearing on its cover from the wounds which had appeared in his wrists during the night.

Life Sentence

LIFE SENTENCE Knuckles white, Blake gripped the automatic pistol in his left hand and listened to the waves sucking the shore. An inward rush followed by a moment of burbling calm. The loud clatter of pebbles as the waters receded. Then the roar and rumble as another wave came rushing in. The repetition of tides rolling in above hidden depths.

The Gate

The Gate 'Bored. That's a triple word-score and precisely how I feel.' Shaun turned from the small, Formica table and Scrabble board to look out of the window. The light of the stars in the clear, night sky was blurred by condensation. He groaned, feeling the damp patch on his left shoulder where he'd leant against the glass.

Fumes

FUMES He always found the sound of seagulls disconcerting so far inland. They were wheeling and circling outside, beyond the dark and heavy curtains that were pulled into an overlapping embrace to allow no light, no view of the outside world.

Wind of Change

Wind of Change I stood before the open door and smoothed down my white wedding dress for the umpteenth time. My stomach was full of butterflies fluttering their wings like crazy. I knew that over seventy guests were seated in the next room waiting for the registrar to announce my arrival and the thought of all their faces turned to me just served to make my palms even more sweaty than they already were.
