The Footballer's Fear of the Whistle
Amid the fuss about the death of another, admittedly incredible, footballer from the other side of the world, there's this. It used to be on another site. I wrote it nine years ago the week after his death. I've edited it somewhat. What a terrible waste. Still no explanation of why, although unsubstantiated reports link him to the abuse carried out by boys' coach, Barry Bennell. Anyway, we know the spotlight is hard to give up. Gary Speed (1969-2011).
