I write all sorts, some of it SF, urban fantasy and horror, a lot of it not. Sometimes I can even be funny, so I'm told. My short stories have appeared in the anthologies 'Cold Iron: Ghost Stories from the 21st Century' (Iron Press) and 'Science Fiction For Survival: An Archive For Mars' (Valley Press), as well as in magazines ranging from the literary magazine 'Dreamcatcher' to 'Writing Magazine' and 'The People's Friend' (the latter definitely not SF, urban fantasy or horror). I do regular local spoken word events, and needless to say there is a novel on the go. Do come and have a peep at the blogs, stories and audio at https://www.janeayrie.com - you can even go mad and sign up for my newsletter! Plus the usual social media stuff. All details below. Thanks for dropping in! (Oh, the picture is of my highly critical personal editor.)

The Net Caster (Part Fifteen)

There was nothing soft about the woman sitting at the table. And how did she know my mother?

The Net Caster (Part Fourteen)

Perhaps I could just stay here in the four poster bed, lulled by lavender and flowers and the odd bottle of Aphrodite whisky.

The Net Caster (Part Thirteen)

Faced with a professional assassin awaiting instructions to kill me, I poured myself several glasses of whisky.

Congratulations on your retirement! I never had a career, just a succession of unexpected happenings along the way, but it means there's a few weird stories to recount. I very much look forward to reading some of yours!

This is a joy to read, Jenny, and the video is amazing! And so, obviously, it's our Facebook and X Pick of the Day!

I tried to find a picture that would echo the wonderful video, but none of the fireflies in woodland ones showed up...

I'm a latecomer to this, but it's such a beautiful piece, Lena. The last line is perfect. This one will stay with me.

Posted on Sat, 21 Sep 2024

I think King Starmer is facing all sorts of dragons in Liverpool this week. I have been determined to avoid any rush to judgement because we're still in the very early days, but so far, Alfred, the benefits of my doubt are heading the same way as...

It's always such a pleasure to come back to Willow's world. It's like seeing old friends again. I love the way you control this story, unfolding the characters and the narrative piece by piece so there is always something new to discover. Thank...

A very good read. It reminded me of standing watching the runners come in at the end of the London marathon a few years ago, waiting for my daughter to finish. (She did!) It is indeed really uplifting to hear the crowd cheering for everyone. And...

As every, you perfectly weave landscape and past together, and bring both alive. Like Penny, I thought your last line was brilliant. Congratulations on the very well-deserved golden cherries.

I wonder if a mediocre moon

Posted on Mon, 16 Sep 2024

I wonder if a mediocre moon is also a dressing-gown moon? It gets up and thinks, no, not tonight, really can't be bothered, I'm just going to sit in my dressing-gown and eat my own crackers. Let them say what they like.

Funny and original...

It must be hard for a politician, having to halve your vocabulary so you only use 'acceptable' words for what is going on. Having to tread on eggshells in case an inappropriate word can lose you the party whip or the business that war is good for...
