I particularly liked 'brides of snow and ice' and their wings as 'new moons'.
They are the strangest creatures though aren't they, the evil giraffe of the bird-world.

I think the characters and the set up are too good for this to turn out to be a prank. There's no emotional involvement in a prank. That's not to say I didn't like it. It's fine writing. But I suppose I don't like things in general, crime stories...
