I wasn't thinking of Kafka when I wrote the story - more German silent cinema - but I can see the similarity.

The painting on which the story is based is in the current Expressionist exhibition at Tate...

Very good. I can imagine that stuff like this goes through the minds of a lot of stand-ups who are trying to be 'edgy'; and there's often a fine line between being funny and being a verbal bully.

Conveys life's disappointments and feelings of fragility, without sinking into hopelessness, with a plenty of nuance and a strong sense of the real world. I could identify with elements of this quite strongly.
