I think there's valid scope for argument as to how that young woman truly feels about what she did a few years ago. I don't have a position on that; like most people I'm too far detachjed to really know her state of mind. But the fact remains...

Assuming this is written from a perspective of around 20+ years ago, as references suggest World War One and it mentions the ex-soldier's centenary. Good in conveying a lot through a handful of vivid images.

I like the way you build up a sense of intrigue to reveal something quite remarkable about the character; and the reaction of his daughter is a lovely touch that takes it out on a high note.

Unpredictable and a nice twist at the end.
