Funny, warm hearted, and I like the way you focus on a detail of modern history to convey the relationships within your family.
It could do with a proof read: there are some typos and you need to decide whether or not you are spelling out...

Considering it's an extract this works very well as a standalone piece. A credible slice of the type of angst that affects many people at some stage in their life, but with a nice uplifting conclusion. Good one Harry.

One typo: you talk about a temp making positive notices when I think you mean noises.

As someone who was once an occasional, and unwilling goalkeeper on Sunday mornings, I can identify with this completely. The sense of desolation does take one to a spiritual place that would have been a great inspiration to Shakespeare.
