Going Native

Tania watched from the beach as her lover played in the warm sea, diving, erupting like an orca, jack-knifing gracefully, spinning in the water for joy of release from gravity's grip. She enjoyed watching Hannah's pleasure, but did not share it. The sea frightened her and its inhabitants (scale, slime, sting, claw, tooth, tentacle) terrified her. The water stole breath, extinguished the flame of life if it got the chance. She occasionally dabbled her feet in its warm shallows, and wished to go no further.

French Pension

I found myself hurtling towards my fiftieth year, and realised with astonishment that I was not, as I had previously assumed, immune from ageing. Along with visions of cheap motor insurance and Saga holidays, came the uncomfortable realisation that I had no pension. Barely a minute's consideration of this terminally tedious subject was enough to tell me that it was too late to start saving now.

"Hmmm, thought God, as he watched the last bit of entropy do its work and the last vestiges of the universe quiver and wither and cease to be. He leaned his handsome chin on his mighty fist (his best smiting fist) and gazed with eyes as infinite as infinity at the newly created void.
