My Eyes Are Wide Open

though too early for you to see what I mean, it's too late for me to leave the world unseen. though too hot to penetrate the reptile's heart, it's too cold for me to ply my customary art. though too low for me to claim a noble right, i'm far too right to bow to might. though too sophisticated to be happy moss, too primitive to rule as Fortinbras. Too sanguine to find quarrel in a straw, too fiery to submit to ignoble law. too black to muffle my midnight moan, too white to leave it vulgarly known. Too experienced to lay bloody trust in words, too naive to leave the election lights to birds. too wise to depress death as a cancer, too wonderfully hateful to call it an answer.
