What a real life story this made, to have been through such a traumatic experience and lived to tell the tale. One can only wonder at such a scary situation, not really able to grasp how close to death they would have been, had it not been for...
Well told story that leaves the reader feeling so sorry for the parents, and the sad truth of how the Sammy's of this world just don't know how to cope with life.
on your question, I think it would bring some drama into the story, if you write about the shoot out at the jail, showing how the trouble came about, perhaps a couple of prisoners revolt, their need for freedom is so strong....
I feel quite sorry for Mark now, having gone so long without a shower and having to drink water out of the toilet, even though it is mostly his own fault.
I wonder if Hornblende will believe Mark when he tell him of his knowledge of Orion...
Now I understand a lot more.

Although this was written as a story, I thought it had words of such a poetic quality. I was drawn in by the title, which I found intriguing.

A great description of a tranquil walk through a grassy glade. I could just picture the scene at the edge of the wood.
Enjoyed reading.

Shadowy images appear to me reading your poem and hearing the great music, especially in that fourth stanza.
I loved this poem as a whole, but those lines:-
Ethereal mist drifts across moss-covered gravestones,

That was so sad that Sophia Cubbett died after giving birth, I can't imagine this scenario, it's just unimaginable and so cruel.
