Absolutely gripping.  I love that initial sense of anticlimax that Sophie feels - makes the whole thing seem very real, despite all the strangeness going on.  Very clever.

Libraries are such precious things - I really identified with this.  As you say, it was the very unstructured nature of it that was so magical.  You could wander round, find something that caught your eye, and it might open up a whole new world...
