Manages to be both sad and optimistic, and to convey the vulnerability and strength of the narrator. There's a whole novel's worth of story in this. I bet there's lots of similar tales in that repressive little community.

Absolutely lovely. My dad had a load of 78rpm vinyl - I could hear every one of them even though I couldn't play them. Eventually I was able to let go of them. The image of the coat is particularly poignant.
