Oh, so clever! You built the narrators character so brilliantly by using contrast to the 'main' character, and the twist coming right at the end - you got me!!!
This is good, AE. 'no use assigning blame.' - that doesn't seem right as you are assigning blame. If you took that out, I think it would work well. Lots of emotion behind the words.
I liked this. If it were mine, I'd omit the last line and leave the outcome to the readers imagination. Just a thought. But I thought it was really good.
