My Projects

  • Grimm Truths

Why would anyone want a queen’s first-born baby? What if the Pied Piper went platinum? At their roots, fairy tales are bleak and brutal. Those who wish that their life was more like a fairy tale would be shocked to find, should their wish be granted, that the reality they rejected was nowhere near as bad. Even if things turned out for the best, they’d still have a heck of a hard time getting to their “Happily Ever After”. That’s the case with the characters we hear from in this collection. Through a mixture of poetry and prose - with altered perspectives, settings and contexts - readers will experience new twists and takes on classic tales that are both humorous and moving.

  • The Huxley Letters

A Steampunk romance/adventure story, born out of roleplay letters with a friend. The noble-born Lady Clara Huxley, trapped in a miserable marriage, longs to escape through travel. Through her various voyages on the airship Aurora with her loyal crew, new worlds are opened up to her in more ways than one. However, some things still anchor her to her tragic past.Clara confides in an American acquaintance through a series of letters, detailing both her global travels, and her life’s journey.

Rubik's Cube

(Image: "Rubiks cube scrambled" by Lars Karlsson. Found on Wikimedia Commons, and used in accordance with Creative Commons Licence Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (CC BY-SA 3.0)) Verses based on some passing thoughts I had while playing with one of these.

Letters to CHIP: The Easter Bunny

(Image: "There's No Place Like Home" by wackystuff. Found on Flickr via Creative Commons, and used in accordance with Creative Commons Licence Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 Generic (CC BY-SA 2.0)) Around Eastertime a few years back, I gave some thought to the characters and personifications that "represent" the holidays - particularly the Easter Bunny - and the issues that such figures would have to face as part of their "duty". This piece is a letter from the Easter Bunny to the Council for Holiday and Imaginary Personifications (CHIP), highlighting some of these issues. Due to the piece's nature and humour, it may be unsuitable for younger readers.

Grimm Truths: The Magic Godfather

(Image: "white limo" (sic) by saytaina. Found on Flickr via Creative Commons, and used in accordance with Creative Commons Licence Attribution 2.0 Generic (CC BY 2.0).) A poetic retelling of "Cinderella". Mike, the Magic Godfather - husband of the more famous Fairy Godmother - appears to help our forlorn heroine. After giving her the essentials that any future princess needs, he decides that HE's going to go to the Ball, too, and have himself a good time... Contains references to alcohol and some very minor cursing.

The Melancholy Ballad of the Clockwork Soldier

(Image: "Clockwork" by William Warby. Found on Flickr via Creative Commons, and used in accordance with Creative Commons Licence Attribution 2.0 Generic (CC BY 2.0)). A rather melodramatic ballad inspired by my interest in steampunk, especially various military-style costumes and clockwork prosthetics I've seen in pictures and at events. Contains hints of violence, mentions of horror-related scientific experimentation, and some minor cursing.

The Person from Porlock

(Image from Wikimedia Commons - in public domain) A quick poem inspired by the famous account of the unknown visitor to the house of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who disrupted the poet while he was writing "Kubla Khan" - which is pictured in the image. There are various theories about "him", but here, I decided to explore what it would be like if the Person interrupted Coleridge on purpose. Maybe "he" just wasn't a poetry fan? Funnily enough, I actually mislaid the notebook I wrote the early lines of this poem in, and had to practically turn my room upside down to find it again. If that isn't karma, I don't know what is.
