Hi, I’m Jessica — still in my 20s, learning to balance writerhood and motherhood, one chaotic day at a time. I’ve been writing since I was 12, at most, and joined this site when I was about 15.

Speculative fiction is my first love (think sci-fi, fantasy, and anything a little strange), but I also dabble in the dark and twisty. Poetry, as well, and sometimes something harder to define.

I’m in Canada, but my roots stretch back to the UK through my mum, who was born and raised there. Happy to be part of this community. smiley

Lovely imagery, evocative!

Here’s hoping the netting does its job this year—those birds clearly knew a good thing when they saw it!

I really enjoyed this—your stream-of-consciousness style is so natural and relatable, it feels like sitting inside someone’s morning brainfog and just riding the current.

And your bit about the news? Spot on. I stopped watching it years...

Thanks so much, Tom! I’m really glad the spacing worked for you—I’ve been experimenting with rhythm and breath on the page, especially in pieces like this where the atmosphere creeps in slowly. It's also easier on the eyes, easier for the...

Thank you so much! I remember that show too—Under the Dome, right? Definitely a similar eerie vibe! As a side note, I remember a line from the book that, for some reason, sticks with me (I had to find it again):

"Cars...

A standalone short in a collection

Posted on Tue, 27 May 2025

Thank you! This one’s a standalone short, but it’s part of a collection of five stories I’m working on—each with its own strange little lens on the world today. The other four are coming soon.

I’ve got a weird writing habit of bouncing...

Oh, Frances! This has such a strong sensory pull—I felt like I was right there, tucked between the noise of the factory and the intimacy of that fleeting glance.

I love how you balanced grit and tenderness: the plastic hands, the slugs,...

Ah, thank you for pointing that out — I love that verse in Micah. “You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea” — such a powerful image of mercy.

Such a heartfelt reflection — beautifully put. That image of God casting our sins into the sea especially stays with me. A timely reminder of grace, and the daily challenge of living it out. Thank you for sharing this.

Thank you so, so much!

Yes, I’ve actually been writing (or editing older versions of) all my recent posts — including poems and Isla’s journal entries — either the day before or the morning of posting!

I think I’m “on a...
