Loosing loved ones is heartbreaking, but Maria's father must have suffered even more, not even being able to say goodbye to his wife. What an awful time the family are having.
A poignant read indeed.

There seems to have been so much bad feeling, then for trouble to happen in the port with lives taken must have been devastating.
I don't know how Maria's family stayed in China, I would have wanted to return to England as soon as possible...
