in my personal opinion I think you should keep that last pharagraph in, as it keeps the story line interesting and makes the reader wonder just exactly what's going to happen next.
Poor Maria, what an awful predicament to be in, torn between right and wrong and not understanding why she wasn't recieving letters. No wonder she wasn't able to write her diary during this time.
