Patrick Kavanagh and Me

I’ve got to give a bit of credit for the first line of this to the late Mr Patrick Kavanagh of 62 Pembroke Road, Dublin. It’s from his poem Canal Bank Walk , written in 1954.

My Verbal Diary Here

I couldn’t match the style of Jenny Skinner’s diary entries but I hope this helps to cheer her up a bit while she’s feeling under the weather.

Me and My Muezzin

When I was a lad I worked on big ships. Here I describe the Suez Canal stretch of a sea passage from Quebec City in Canada to Colombo in Sri Lanka round about 1977. Our ship was loaded with a bulk cargo of poverty relief grain financed by the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA). Some of my writing is an embellishment of the truth and a little bit of it is the result of pure imagination, but this poem is as near to the truth as I could get whilst attempting to remain poetic.

his motto being; what happens at sea, stays at sea.

And a fine motto that is. As a former seafarer myself, perhaps I should adopt the same.

A good start

Oooh Jenny, you've written loads of instalments and I'm only starting to read them now. Apologies for that. However, if they're all as well written as this one it'll take me no time at all to catch up.

Tropical

Great writing with a typically tropical taste... and smells. In fact you took me through the whole range of senses, imagining the scene and wishing I was there.

Treasure

Well worn old things are always more attractive and interesting to look at than the pristine new stuff, in my opinion. We have three very old trunks that use to store linen. From the outside their appearance suggests treasure but inside there's...

Pink

When my partner and I buy plants from a garden centre near to where we live, we ask what colour the flowers will be. The lady proprietor always replies 'mixed' which means that she has no idea. Generally they turn out to be pink.

The next...

Weather or not

I used to treasure the words of my dear old Nan from Sunderland but I could never agree with her 'Cast ne'er a clout 'til May is out' proverb.

My determination to wear shorts and sandals from April to October means that sometimes a...

This is all very interesting stuff Harry. Good on you for getting through it all and good on you for sharing such personal information. You deserve a happy retirement and from what you've described of your stress-filled past, I'm sure you're...

I enjoyed this Jenny. I always enjoy the way you relive your memories through poetry.

This one could be retitled Five Meet the Beach Boys, by Enid Blyton.

Just checking

These lines worried me...

Do you check your phone before you pee in the morning or while you pee?

and

That stuff can wait until the evening,

Do you mean the phone checking can...

Pick of the Dream Pops

Posted on Thu, 08 May 2025

It must be very difficult for any musical performers from Mullingar to succeed, living as they do in the shadow of the immortal Joe Dolan. So fair play to the Gone Forevers. I'm glad their lyrics are in Swedish. I wish Abba could have done the...
