I thought exactly the same thing as Parson! This has such fear and claustrophobia about it that the surreptitious leaving of 'Take the first transport out' is a nice, dark ending. Really atmospheric writing.

You're skillfully developing a sense of character in John without giving away his past. It may sound a little simplistic but it put me in mind of the way Ludlum does it with his Jason Bourne character in the original text before he became a pulp...
