A large yew tree arched over a small stone chapel. Smithy surveyed the rows of headstones, the different sizes and colours. He never did like the black granite ones. They reminded him of tackily designed kitchens.

Ha! Yeah, I read Kestral for a Knave a few years ago for the first time and it blew my mind. Read a fair bit of Barry Hines after. He's a wonderful writer. Great descriptions of home, work and school and a real hard edge to the way he describes...

Read this a few times. I don't have kids myself so am drawing partly on where I grew up and the kids I knew who went into Care and the different stories I heard (some of which would have been true, some made up). I guess that was a long time ago...
