Season of Mists

We walk through the park, holding hands, out of habit. Together. Apart. The November air has that kind of stillness you only get in autumn. Not just...

Death on the Beach

Written after I saw a French and Saunders skit on the iconic scene where the Knight plays chess with Death on the beach, from Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal . This has been previously posted on ABC, so it might look familiar. There are a few stories I'm putting back up.

Some You Win ..

'Would you like a beer', asks the host. I think he's called Mark. I open my mouth but before I can speak, James says 'She doesn't drink'. He tries to...

Can you be drowned in a storm-wracked sky As deep as a storm-wracked sea ? Can you run aground on a pale full moon And shelter in her lee ?

I've just read the background to how he wrote  A Well Respected Man as well as the lyrics.  A luxury resort in Torquay – maybe he was staying at Fawlty Towers ?

Congratulations on winning the competition !  You really should have...

Waterloo Sunset

'Jimmy would meet Julie at Waterloo Station just as the sun was setting'.

Worse than that never hearing of the Woodetops, Andy Pandy or The Flower Pot Men, Tim hadn't read a single book since he left school apart from a Wilbur Smith novel which someone had given his mother when she was in hospital.  This was nothing to...

You're a natural story teller

Posted on Tue, 21 Jul 2026

You're a natural story teller Jane, it's so easy to slide into this and be right there.  I loved your phrase 'if you’re going to kill every man who speaks out of turn to you, you’re going to need your own graveyard'.

Hi Paul

Hi Paul

Your poem is a lovely memorial to Skye.  They always stay with you, loyal even after they've left. Little reminders pop up.  I do hope you get another one, please tell us if you do.

Gosh Turlough I had no idea

Posted on Thu, 09 Jul 2026

Gosh Turlough I had no idea of all that, and me a Catholic in a convent in the 60s and 70s too.  Thank you for explaining it, I will go and look it up.  I'd read your book about it.

Re the bonfires, I did see today in the news about the...

God knows, apparently

I always found it strange at the height of the Troubles that we had different kinds of Christians literally attacking another.

We haven't moved on since the medieval period when the Crusades moved from the Middle East to Eastern Europe and...
