"Penny's Pass the Story"

Mornington Heights is an uncomplicated hamlet filled with people who’d lived there most, if not all, of their lives and most had either bought or been deeded their home or land by a relative, so it was safe to say everyone here knew everyone else. So it was unthinkable, shocking, terribly worrying when a crime occurred in this sleepy, happy hamlet, and all the suspects were neighbors.
The crime tape in front of a familiar house sent chills down the sheriff’s spine.
Someone had broken into that house and even though a body wasn’t found inside, there was a chilling amount of blood on a beloved oriental carpet the sheriff knew was a prized possession of the elderly man who lived there, who he hoped would be able to still live there once they found him, hopefully in good health, or well enough to be brought back to good health….and then there was the mystery of a small safe the sheriff found in a wall behind an old recliner. It was open and empty. Why the old man had a safe and what he’d kept in it were questions he’d like answered, but who could he ask? The only people who’d been around at the time this horror of a kidnapping or worse had occurred were Mr. Snodgrass’s neighbors, his neighbors.
How could he investigate, question or even suspect people he’d known since childhood? HIs badge told him that was exactly what he’d have to do, question his friendly, nosy, quirky neighbors, as suspects.

I pride myself on being able to mss the most obvious clues. But unfunnily enough, I do know a Snodgrass. I'll go first and leave the solving to better sleuths.

Brilliant! I can't think of a better writer to start things off. Don't forget you have until Friday night to post part two though you can post it sooner. I'm looking forward to whatever happens next!
