Into the valley of death...  really made me laugh.  Reminded me of all those times we were horrid to new young teachers, just because we could be.  Children are nasty little beasts.

Manages to be both sad and optimistic, and to convey the vulnerability and strength of the narrator.  There's a whole novel's worth of story in this.  I bet there's lots of similar tales in that repressive little community.

Absolutely lovely.  My dad had a load of 78rpm vinyl - I could hear every one of them even though I couldn't play them.  Eventually I was able to let go of them.  The image of the coat is particularly poignant.
