Pick of the Month

My Mother And I Agree On Something

I lost my Mum last month. She was a funny and wise woman, and I wrote this last year after a conversation during which, for once, we really did agree on something.

The Restructure Roundel

Met up with a former colleague the other day. This is for all those who are now, or ever have been, working in public services.

Not Quite The Eve Of Destruction (2017 IP)

‘Can’t I have one? Just one little one? I’ve been so good all year…’ ‘No you bloody can’t, and put that Scythe down or I swear to Me I’ll confiscate it for good.'

So I went on this poetry course, and wrote a sonnet to my house. As you do.

Bob Dylan (IP)

My first and definitely last poetic contribution to ABC Tales.

I bloody well wish I'd done this to mine before I retired.  She's a woman, but I think in her case the ping pong balls are where her heart should be.  Either that or a lump of sulphur.

Great stuff.

Posted on Fri, 26 Oct 2018

The flu epidemic of 1918 killed millions of people, far more than the first world war did, so if the powers that be really want to reduce the population, stopping the flu jab would be one of the best ways to do it.  The jab is isn't perfect, it...

I was delighted to see this piece.  Peterloo is a much neglected part of our history.  My kids, one of whom took History GCSE, were never taught anything about it at school, or indeed about the Chartists or the Tolpuddle Martrys.  Or Tom Paine. ...

I think my younger self would probably be appalled at me, but I'd try to reassure her with that George Eliot quote:  It is never too late to be what you might have been.

That's a horrible situation

Posted on Tue, 09 Oct 2018

That's a horrible situation to be in.  I've been in similar, it really does sap your confidence and your energy, and it's shocking that your management won't do anything about it.  There's some useful information from ACAS here:  ...
