"Spirt of Sleepy Hollow on All Hallows Eve" (short story) Part 1 of 4

“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (The tale of the Headless Horseman) is a ghost story set in Upstate New York in the town of Sleepy Hollow. It was written in 1820 by Washington Irving who lived there. The story has been depicted in plays, movies and even in Disney’s memorable cartoon form. I had visited this area when I was in New York and during Halloween the town does do justice to its legend...this sparked a story for me and what follows is a short story spun from that visit...I hope you enjoy it.

Movement, so beautifully done

Posted on Thu, 16 Feb 2023

Movement, so beautifully done in your words, taking us from the depth, the soil, the darkness to light, from the seed to the bloom; the emergence of spring. A lovely poem and one I will enjoy reading again.

The journey through grief is

Posted on Sat, 25 Feb 2023

The journey through grief is a personal one and you move through all the phases of loss in your autobiography. It is a story we all share at one time or another; the loss of someone precious in our life and how we learn to survive without them,...

Posted on Sat, 28 Jan 2023

I like the determination to keep an optimistic outlook in your poem and it's true; it is a choice we make to find the bright spot in our days, but it can be difficult to sustain when times are hard and the belief in a better day is hard to see. ...

Unusual encounter indeed

Posted on Tue, 17 Jan 2023

Unusual encounter indeed Jenny. It is amazing that a swan would want to enter a confined space or a strange object, like a bus unless they’ve evolved and now understand it is a way to get around without flapping wings. Maybe the swans in that...

Yes that phrase, "Two midnights in a jar," will never leave my mind and will forever be the perfect definition of darkness. Brilliant! Your poem flows effortlessly and packs a punch at the end. I loved it.

I had once been in that position with my elderly dad, it is not easy for them to be away from family and all that is familiar to them; they will deteriorate quickly in a strange environment, like a hospital, or even a rehab. So I was happy to...

Moving story, showing the plight of the children in an unstable marriage; you've highlighted it. How the oldest child had to become the parent and sort out the troubled marriage by forcing her father to admit his choice; very sad and all too true...

This is an exceptional piece

Posted on Sun, 08 Jan 2023

This is an exceptional piece of writing Paul and I want to do it justice in my comments. First off, it drew me in from the first line; I didn’t feel it was fictional; it felt like I was reading a journal entry because of the realistic flow of...

Human entitlement knows no bounds. Your poetic words poignantly highlight the tragedies caused by man. Your depiction of the dolphin’s plight is terrifying and painful to read in its truth, and makes me wish there was some magic in the world that...
