I wasn't thinking of Kafka when I wrote the story - more German silent cinema - but I can see the similarity.

The painting on which the story is based is in the current Expressionist exhibition at Tate...

Great story Turlough. Captures all the tension of wanting to be cool while being bound to your parents, and I get the references to ths school curriculum and music of the time (guess I'm about the same age as you). And a brilliant little twist at...

Very good. I can imagine that stuff like this goes through the minds of a lot of stand-ups who are trying to be 'edgy'; and there's often a fine line between being funny and being a verbal bully.

Conveys life's disappointments and feelings of fragility, without sinking into hopelessness, with a plenty of nuance and a strong sense of the real world. I could identify with elements of this quite strongly.
