GOLDENEYE
The beginning
Goldeneye. The one name people far and wide feared to say. It all
started about twenty years ago, when Vadger Duff had lost his left eye
in the battle of Carribo. His enemy Captain Scarlet had been shot, but
before he died he threw his spear with his last strength and damaged
Vadger's eye badly. Vadger lay in his bed for four days and nights
before his healer Crume, gave him a golden eye. He was given a nickname
Goldeneye as he
would not answer to the name Vadger. He then left the island and
disappeared for over twenty years.
'He's dead,' said some folk from the island.
'Rubbish,' muttered other people. Everybody had different thoughts
until one sunny afternoon.
The Return
'Mother Mother,'
Rodger's mother, Mary, looked behind as she heard her son running in
from fishing out in the sea.
'What dear,' she answered smiling.
'You'll never guess who I've just seen,' he said.
'I'm not in the mood for guessing games,' she sighed sitting in a
battered old chair. 'Why don't you just tell me?'
'Well,' said Rodger. 'You know the story you always used to tell me
about Goldeneye. Well I have just seen a man with a golden eye with a
whole crew pulling a boat up the shore.'
'Lot's of people have golden eyes dear,' said his mother calmly.
'Bu?' started Rodger.
'No buts dear,' said his mother. 'Now eat your tea before it gets
cold.'
'Alright,' he muttered, and he sat down to eat his already cold
chicken.
It was 6:00pm and Rodger's dad, Joe, had just returned from the sea
from catching fish. The door slammed shut as Joe ran in.
'He's back Mary,' he cried wildly. Mary looked puzzled. 'Goldeneye is
back!' His wife clapped a hand over her mouth.
Rodger smiled. 'I told you so!'
Goldeneye himself
'Come on lads it's only a ship,' shouted Goldeneye looking at the
so-called 'crew' he had pulling a ship up the shore with ropes.
'Come on Cap'n,' muttered Samuel, the cook. 'This ship is too heavy!
Even with the strength of everybody in this crew isn't gonna move
this.'
'You'll do what I say boy,' shouted Goldeneye picking Samuel up and
shoving him against the side of the ship. 'Coz I'm Goldeneye, and no
one dares mess with me! You should know that as you're in my
crew.'
'W?well I?I am new sir,' stammered Samuel.
'Oh yes I forgot that,' said Goldeneye, dropping Samuel in the sand.
'But now you know you'd better not do it again,' and with that he
walked off down the beach.
'Don't worry about him,' about him muttered Crume pulling his friend
up. 'He's in one of his moods. I'll sort him out later.'
'Oh I think he's worth worrying about,' said a cold voice.
'Sennel,' said Crume looking around. 'Where are you?' A tall man came
out of the shadows.
'You don't want to mess with me, Rufus or Cap'n,' he muttered coldly.
He then made his way to where Goldeneye was waiting with another evil
looking man.
'Goldeneye, Sennel and Rufus,' he said. 'You don't want to mess with
them.' Samuel looked over to the three men and gulped. 'Come on,' said
Crume. 'We'd best get the ship up to the beach for his lordship.'
'That sums up Goldeneye nicely,' chuckled Samuel smiling.
The Orb of Fire
'Ello mates,' smiled Goldeneye putting his arms round Rufus and Sennel.
'Now would you do your old pal a favour?' The two pirates smiled
craftily at on another and nodded.
'Right answer,' said Goldeneye releasing his arms around their
shoulders. 'That favour is to not tell a soul about what I'm going to
tell you. Ok?' They both yet again nodded.
'Now I'm going to tell you both about my father Vilu Duff,' croaked
Goldeneye. 'He told me before he died that the civilians who live here
have one treasure called The Orb of Fire. Now they buried it somewhere
on this island. Now the only people who have the map to where it is
buried is the chief of this village and me. These people living here
aren't bothered about this Orb or any other Orb to be precise as long
as they're safe. So I'm going to beat them to the chase!' Rufus and
Sennel smiled.
'What does this Orb of Fire do?' asked Sennel
'It allows me to control all the things on this island,' smiled
Goldeneye. 'Then maybe even the world!
'Where's the map Cap'n?' asked Rufus.
'Here,' answered Goldeneye spreading it out on a rock. 'This is where
we will find the first clue, right in the centre of the forest so us
three are going to go out looking 'for food!'
'But Cap'n,' said Sennel. 'You just said we were looking for the
Orb?'
'That's what we are looking for stupid,' muttered Goldeneye. 'But the
rest of the crew think we are going for food.' Sennel nodded. 'Lets
move tomorrow,' shouted Goldeneye, 'We'll take a sleep on the beacon,'
he said walking towards the shore.
The chase begins
'Come on mother,' shouted Rodger bouncing on top of her bed the next
morning. 'We've got to tell Chief Ali about Goldeneye.'
'Alright darling,' groaned his mother. 'Go and get your self ready and
then we will be able to go.'
'Yeah!' shouted Rodger, and then he bounced of the already creaking bed
and scurried off to the river for a wash.
An hour later and Rodger and his family were trudging through the
Blueberry forest to where Chief Ali lived. As soon as they neared the
house, they were greeted by the friendly barking of Jasper the chief's
wolf.
'Down boy,' said a voice from inside the hut. The door at last opened a
crack so the family could squeeze in without letting the wolf
out.
'Hello Mary,' said Ali. 'How are you?'
'We're all fine,' answered Mary.
'Now what brings you all down here,' asked Ali? Then the whole family
launched into the story about how they found out that Goldeneye was
back while Ali listened.
'We just don't know why he came back here?' ended Joe. 'Unless he knows
about the Orb!'
'I'm afraid he does,' said Ali sadly. 'His father attacked my fathers
house long ago and found the map. I expect Goldeneye has now got the
map. I've got another map, which leads you to the first clue. What we
need to do is get to the Orb before Goldeneye does.'
'No one on this island can do it,' sighed Mary we're all to old
'I could do it,' said Rodger. 'Let me go.'
'You can't go you're far too young,' said his mother.
'No I'm not,' said Rodger. 'I can go can't I dad?'
'Ok,' said his father after a pause. 'Go and pack your bags now. We
can't afford to waste any more time. Goodbye and good luck.'
'See you darling,' muttered Mary keeping back the tears whilst she
hugged him. 'Keep our island safe,'
'Take Jasper with you,' shouted Ali letting Rodger take Jaspers lead
and the map. 'He will help you a great deal. Good luck,' so Rodger ran
into the distance towards his home one last time for a long
while.
'I'm going to miss him,' sniffed Mary standing in the doorway with
Joe.
'He's eleven darling,' said Joe putting an arm around her. 'He can't
stay a child for ever.'
That had been yesterday. Today, Rodger was walking through the forest,
with Jasper loping happily at his side glad for the long walks he had
had. 'Now the first clue should be around here somewhere,' muttered
Rodger looking around. He noticed an old willow and saw on the map that
the clue would be around an old willow. He got out his shovel and
started to dig down. He soon found a piece of bark with writing on. It
said
You've found the first clue,
Well done your clue is:
What is heavy one way and the other way Not?
If you want to live then I would leave this spot
Or you will be left to rot!
Then suddenly out of the hole poured red ants. Red ants in England are
just ants that nip you but these ants poison you!
'AAAHHH,' cried Rodger throwing the bark strip away as he ran
willy-nilly off into the forest. The ants following Rodger and Jasper
deeper into the forest.
They only stopped when they knew that the ants wouldn't be following.
Rodger then sat there thinking about the clue. 'What is heavy one way
and the other way not?' Then he got it!
'THE ANSWER IS A TON,' he shouted patting a very puzzled Jasper on the
head.
'Ton is heavy one way but if you spell it the other way it spells not!'
then he sat down to think again. 'But where can I find a ton on this
island.' He wondered around the clearing. 'I'll think about it in the
morning,' he said pitching his tent and falling straight to
sleep.
'I've got the answer,' shouted Rodger waking up in the middle of the
night. 'The Stone Throne is a ton! That's where the next clue is,' then
he fell straight back to sleep!
Goldeneye begins
'Come on Sennel, Rufus,' muttered Goldeneye shaking them awake. 'It's
time to go,' In 5 minutes, both Sennel and Rufus were ready with their
packs.
'Shall we go without leaving a trace, or write a note to the others?'
asked Rufus, nodding his head towards the other crew members that were
still asleep in their bunks snoring uproariously.
'Leave them a note saying that we've gone for a scout around the island
and we'll come back with treasures!' answered Goldeneye turning towards
the forest. 'But hurry up, people might know what we're up to and start
looking themselves.'
Five minutes later, and the small group were on the way to the first
clue.
'This map only leads up to the first clue so it is only handy for
finding the first clue,' said Rufus who was leading the way. 'According
to this, the first clue is by a Willow in the forest so we're going the
right way.'
'Good thing to, or you're dead meat,' muttered Goldeneye under his
breath. Sennel smaned.
At last the small group came to a halt at the Old Willow.
'Here we are,' said Rufus throwing the map away 'This is where the
first clue is.'
'And I've found it,' said Sennel waving the piece of bark around in the
air until finally giving it to Goldeneye.
'It says,' muttered Goldeneye then he read out the clue.
'Or you will be left to rot,' muttered Sennel. 'What would that mean
Cap'n?'
'I know what it means,' gulped Rufus, looking at his feet. Goldeneye
gave him a puzzled look.
'Look down,' he muttered.
'RED ANTS!!,' screamed Sennel and climbed up a tree before anyone could
tell him not to.
'Come back down stupid,' shouted Goldeneye, picking an ant up. 'They're
only toys.'
'Oh,' muttered Sennel and hastily climbed back down.
'Hey,' cried Rufus bending down to look at the ground. 'Hey. Cap'n
there's some tracks leading into the forest. Do you think it will lead
us to the next clue?'
'Good thinking Rufus,' said Goldeneye nodding at Rufus. 'Lets follow
these tracks, they could lead somewhere.' So Goldeneye, Rufus and
Sennel followed Rodger's and Jasper's tracks to where they where both
just waking up.
The second clue
'Morning Jas,' yawned Rodger stretching his arms and legs. 'We've got
some work to do as I know where the next clue is.'
Jasper lifted his head of his paws as if he was interested.
'You want to now where it is,' said Rodger putting his pack on. 'Then
you've got to follow me. Come on.' Jasper paused as in thought then ran
off after Rodger.
After half a day of walking through Blueberry woods, Rodger and Jasper
had finally got to the Stone Throne.
'This is it Jas,' muttered Rodger looking around. 'Now the hard job is
finding the clue but don't think you're not helping as you are so
there!' He then took his bag off his back and started going along the
floor on hands and knees searching for the clue.
It was half an hour later when the clue was found. But Rodger didn't
find it; Jasper was the one who found it. He just came up to Rodger
with a piece of bark in is mouth wanting to play fetch.
'Good boy,' said Rodger praising the happy wolf. He then through a
stick into a glade nearby to keep him occupied. He meanwhile read the
clue.
Well done, well done,
Your halfway there so keep it up
Your clue is
What gets wetter as it dries?
Good luck good luck
As I think you will need it!
Rodger paused for a moment, wondering whether he was going to be
attacked by ants again. Nothing happened for about another minute.
Still not wanting to take any chances he whistled for Jasper then put
his bag back on his back waiting for Jasper to
come back. Jasper came out of the forest at a run.
'Come on boy,' cried Rodger running ahead. 'Lets get out of here,' He
then ran off into the distance without looking back. Which was probably
better than looking, otherwise he would have seen the scary face of
Rufus staring back at him.
Following
'Where is that man?' muttered Goldeneye under his breath.
'He might be coming back now,' said Sennel closing his eyes. 'Actually
he's here now,' said Goldeneye, walking towards the shadowy figure that
was fast approaching the temporary camp they had set up.
'Did you see 'im,' shouted Goldeneye.
'Aye I saw 'im,' said Rufus. 'He seems to know where he's going but I'm
not sure. I think we ought to follow 'im.'
'Yeah lets follow him,' shouted Sennel as he walked towards them.
'No one asked for you're opinion,' said Goldeneye. 'But lets follow
him. Pack up camp you two, but be quick!'
A couple of minutes later, the make shift camp was gone, and the three
crewmates, were once again following Rodgers tracks.
Rufus bent down to look at the tracks when Rodger had ran off into the
jungle from the Stone Throne.
'Looks as though he's run off,' he muttered under his breath, looking
around for any signs of red ants.
'We'll just have to follow him,' said Goldeneye, standing up. 'Maybe he
will lead us to the Orb. Come on, we're moving out,' so Goldeneye kept
following Rodger's tracks, hoping they were right.
'What gets wetter as it dries, what gets wetter as it dries,' muttered
Rodger to himself. He sat on a stump, repeating those words to himself.
He rummaged around in his bag for something to eat and came across a
towel.
'Of course!' shouted Rodger. 'A towel. It dries something whilst
getting wetter itself,' so Rodger, ran down to the Piranha Pool as fast
as he could.
'That is where the next clue is,' said Rodger to Jasper. Jasper barked
in agreement.
'Come on Jasper,' said Rodger running on ahead. 'The next clue must be
in the Piranha Pool!' So off they ran not knowing that three pirates
were closely following them.
The Piranha Pool
'Here we are Jas,' muttered Rodger. 'This is where the next clue is.'
Jasper ran towards the pool, eager for a quick dip.
'NO JASPER,' shouted Rodger jumping on top of the wolf. 'You can't go
in there there's piranhas in there. They'd eat you alive.'
The wolf sat down disappointedly but almost at once stood up again
barking at the top of his voice.
'What is it boy?' asked Rodger. Jasper kept on barking. Rodger couldn't
work out what was the matter with him until he realized that Jasper was
just staring at something in the middle of the pool. A treasure chest
was what Jasper was continually staring at.
'Good boy Jasper,' said Rodger comforting the wolf. 'I think you just
found the next clue.' Jasper, knowing that Rodger knew about the
treasure chest flopped down beside the pool and got ready for a nice
long sleep! But Rodger however had a lot of thinking to do. How was he
going to get the chest from deep in a pool full of piranhas?
Half an hour later, Rodger had almost given up hope of going down into
the water to get the chest. He had tried everything he could think of.
It was only when he felt around in his bag for something to eat, when
he found a bone of Jasper's with a little meat left on it.
'Piranhas eat meat!' cried Rodger. 'If I throw this into the water the
fish will go after it and leave me a clear run to get to the chest.' So
that's exactly what he did. He got changed into his swimming things,
which he had bought just in case and threw the leftover meat into the
pool. The piranhas swam over to where the meat landed. Rodger then had
time to dive down into the pool.
After ten minutes, Rodger reached the bottom of the pool and was able
to look round for the chest. He found it quite easily which was just as
well as the piranhas had finished their starter meal and were looking
for desert! Rodger saw the piranha coming back before they saw him. He
picked up the chest and made his way quickly back up to the surface.
The piranha didn't notice him.
'I'm back Jasper,' shouted Rodger once he came back to the surface.
'Here's the chest.'
'Why thank you,' said a cold voice taking the chest from Rodger. Rodger
looked around and saw no sign of Jasper, then looked up and saw the
ugly face of Goldeneye staring back at him.
'Once again. Thanks,' laughed Goldeneye then he gave Rodger a blow to
the head knocking him unconscious.
'Nice of him to give me the chest like that,' muttered Goldeneye. The
other two pirates laughed. They opened the chest then got out a piece
of bark and an old map. The bark said:
Good work good work.
You've found the last clue.
This map will lead you,
To you're goal.
'Well then boys,' said Goldeneye putting an arm around the two pirates.
'I think that the Orb of Fire, is ours!' He then tied and gagged Rodger
picked up the map and lead the laughing pirates away from Rodger's
senseless body.
It was evening when Rodger regained consciousness. He wondered where he
was for a couple of minutes and then it dawned on him. Goldeneye had
the chest and the next clue. He lay there thinking about how he was
going to get out of this mess. He then heard a funny snuffling noise
from inside the wood. After a couple of minutes Rodger's faithful
companion, Jasper, leapt out of the forest and started gnawing through
Rodger's bonds.
Soon afterwards Rodger and Jasper started following the pirates
tracks.
The three pirates ahead, however where just setting up camp for the
night.
'Tomorrow boys,' said Goldeneye. 'We'll be rich men. We'll probably be
able to control this whole island, and of course. We'll have the Orb!'
The other men smaned.
'Night Cap'n,' yawned Sennel. Then they all retreated into their tents
and were snoring as soon as their heads touched their makeshift
pillows.
The final Race
Rodger was up early the next morning.
'Come on Jasper!' shouted Rodger. 'We've got to get a good head start.
There's still a chance of us getting to the Orb before Goldeneye,' and
then he disappeared into the forest still half asleep.
Unfortunately Goldeneye had decided to do the same thing. Getting a
good head start.
'I think that we are here,' shouted Rufus as he looked at the map. 'And
according to this the Orb of Fire is just about here.' He pointed to
the ground around an old Silver birch.
'Best you start digging then,' said Goldeneye and handed the two
pirates spades. After a slight pause, the pirates hit lucky and quite
soon after had pulled up a round ball with the glow of an amber fire
surrounding it.
'At last,' cried Goldeneye, taking the Orb from a dazed Rufus. 'I can
control everyone and everything on this island.'
'Not while I'm around,' cried a voice from the forest.
Goldeneye turned round and saw the figure of Rodger standing by
Jasper.
'Not you again,' sighed Goldeneye. 'Get 'im lads,' and two pirates
jumped on top of Rodger knocking him of his feet.
'Get help Jasper!' cried Rodger as a piece of cloth was stuffed into
his mouth and his becoming bound. Jasper quickly ran off to the village
to get Rodger help.
'Well well,' chuckled Goldeneye. 'If it isn't our first victim to fall
under our power.' Rodger spat out the cloth.
'I will never serve you,' he snarled. 'Not even if you hypnotise me
under the Orb.' Goldeneye growled and held the Orb in front of Rodgers
face.
'We'll see about that then,' chuckled Goldeneye as he put his whole
strength into controlling Rodger.
' Er Cap'n,' said Sennel tapping Goldeneye on the shoulder.
'What,' he snapped back.
'I think that we are kind of dead.'
'Why are we kind of dead?' asked Goldeneye. Looking up at Sennel. He
pointed straight ahead of him. In a circle around them were all the
villagers armed with fire, spears and wolves at their feet.
'Not so great are we now Goldeneye?' said Rodger, signalling Jasper to
come and bite through his bonds.
'Retreat to the ship!' shouted Goldeneye, dropping the Orb and crashing
back through the undergrowth to the ship with a hundred people hot on
his trail.
'EVERYBODY ON THE SHIP,' shouted Goldeneye to the surprised pirates as
he neared the camp.
'Wh?' started one of them.
'Just do it and when you're on get the ship out of the bay as quick as
you can,' he screamed then disappeared onto the boat.
Rodger picked up the Orb and watched the boat disappear into the
ocean.
'I don't think we'll see him again Jas,' said Rodger smiling then he
started walking back to his town for a hero's welcome.
